Michael Faust (born January 16, 1959 in Cologne ) is a German musician ( flautist ), professor at the Robert Schumann University in Düsseldorf and founder of the Gargonza Arts scholarship program .

education

Michael Faust began his training in his hometown of Cologne with Achim Tornow and from 1972 at the Rheinische Musikschule with Cäcilie Lamerichs. From 1977 to 1981 he studied at the Hamburg University of Music and Performing Arts with Karlheinz Zöller . He passed his concert exam in 1985. In Basel he received private lessons from Auréle Nicolet .

Career as an orchestral musician

His career as an orchestral musician led him at the age of 20 as principal flautist to the Orchestra di Santa Cecilia in Rome , later in this position to the Hamburg Philharmonic Orchestra, the Württemberg State Orchestra Stuttgart and the Munich Philharmonic under Sergiu Celibidache . Since 1988 he has held the position of solo flutist with the WDR Symphony Orchestra in Cologne . During his studies he was a flautist in the Junge Deutsche Philharmonie and an academician in the Berliner Philharmoniker . With this orchestra he also made several tours.

Several composers wrote works for Michael Faust and the Ensemble Contrasts Köln , which he founded , a. a. York Höller, Manfred Trojahn , Heinz-Martin Lonquich, Bojidar Dimov , Gunther Schuller, Mauricio Kagel and Pēteris Vasks . This and his participation in festivals such as the Darmstadt Days for New Music show his commitment to contemporary music. Faust suggested a new work by Mauricio Kagel, entitled Das Konzert , as it is the first solo concerto from the pen of the Argentine-German composer. The world premiere took place as part of the Ruhr Triennale on October 2, 2003 at the Deutsche Oper am Rhein .

In 2009 Michael Faust launched the Flute Concerto dedicated to him by the Latvian composer Peteris Vasks with the WDR Symphony Orchestra Cologne under Semyon Bychkov in the Philharmonie Köln .

Solo career

Since then, solo concerts have taken him to almost every country in Europe, to North and South America, through Africa and to Japan.

Highlights of his career have also included performances of Jacques Ibert's Flute Concerto with the Moscow Radio Symphony Orchestra under Vladimir Fedosejev in the Tchaikovsky Hall of the Moscow Conservatory , performances of Gunther Schuller's Flute Concerto with the Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra and a recital in the Chamber Music Hall of New York's Carnegie Hall .

Michael Faust played solo concerts at various locations such as the Cologne Philharmonic (including Gunther Schuller's Flute Concerto with the WDR Symphony Orchestra Cologne under Hans Vonk and in 2005 "The Concert" by Mauricio Kagel with the Gürzenich Orchestra under Markus Stenz ), the Kioi-hall in Tokyo , the Teatro Amazonas in Manaus and in Spokane , USA, where he is an annual guest at the Northwest Bach Festival . Michael Faust founded the wind quintet Zephyr with musicians from the WDR symphony orchestra, which celebrated great success. He is currently performing in a duo with partners Sheila Arnold (piano / fortepiano) and Andreas Mildner (harp).

CDs

In addition to a large series of productions for radio and television stations all over Germany, France, the USA and Japan, Michael Faust recorded the work ' El Cimarrón ' by Hans-Werner Henze in 1990 after a first record with the pianist Alexander Lonquich . Teaching

Michael Faust gives master classes in Europe, South America, Japan, China and the USA. He began teaching at the Robert Schumann University of Applied Sciences in Düsseldorf in 1988 and has been a full professor there since 2013. He was also a lecturer at the European Mozart Foundation in Prague and Warsaw for several years . He gives annual courses at the Forum Artium ( Georgsmarienhütte ) and at the Kalamata Conservatory as well as regularly at the European Academy Palazzo Ricci in Montepulciano .

Scholarship project

In 2011 Michael Faust founded the Gargonza Arts scholarship program . The association runs the Gargonza Arts project. This artists-in-residence project annually awards prizes and grants to young, highly talented artists from various art disciplines.
