Saint Martin Church in Mios

Mio is a French commune with 9,959 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the Gironde in the region Nouvelle-Aquitaine . Administratively it is assigned to the canton of Gujan-Mestras and the arrondissement of Arcachon .

The municipality is located around 36 kilometers southwest of Bordeaux , in the Pays de Buch , which is one of the areas of the Landes de Gascogne . The place is on the river Eyre (locally also called Leyre ). Its tributary Lacanau runs in the north and west of the municipality, which is also part of the Landes de Gascogne Regional Nature Park .

Mios has a huge community area of ​​over 137 square kilometers (mostly forested) and is served by the Autoroutes A63 and A660 .

history

The region was already inhabited in the Iron Age. Testimony of this is the tumulus de Pujaut , a hillside grave in Mios. In the Middle Ages, Mios was a large fiefdom , but of little importance. The area was originally very swampy. After the drainage , a heather landscape formed , which was later afforested.

The population has more than doubled since the 1980s. It grew especially since the turn of the millennium.

Attractions

  • The Saint-Martin church was originally built in the Romanesque style. The choir and the side chapels are Gothic . The building was enlarged in the 19th century. Inside, some remains of the glass from the 16th century have been preserved.
  • The Saint-Brice chapel has a bell from 1700.
