geography

Salles is located in the south of the Gironde in the Landes de Gascogne Regional Nature Park in the Eyre Valley ( Val d'Eyre ), about 50 kilometers southwest of Bordeaux and 15 kilometers southeast of the Bassin d'Arcachon , a bay in the Atlantic Ocean . The main neighborhoods are Lavignolle in the northeast, Le Caplanne in the west, Bilos in the southwest and Lanot in the south. 90 percent of the municipality is forested.

history

Archaeological finds on the banks of the Eyre prove the presence of people in the region in prehistoric times . In Gallo-Roman times (1st century BC to 5th century) it was called Salles Salomacum (salt market). Salomacum was on an important Roman road that led from Roncesvalles ( Summus Pyrenaeus ) in Spain to Kembs ( Cambete ) in Alsace .

Attractions

Salles Castle was built in the 17th century and restored in the 19th century. It is privately owned and now serves as a hotel.

The church of Salles was built in the 19th century in place of an original older chapel .

economy

In 1902 a plant for the distillation of resin from the maritime pine and the production of rosin was built. In 1925, the plant belonged to the then mayor Albert Brun. The factory worked until 1960. Today the buildings are in poor condition.

An original Moulin de Dubern ( Dubern Mill ) was built in the 15th century. A new flour mill called Moulin de Menespher was built on the same site in the 18th century . Today's Moulin de Dubern has belonged to the Dufaure family since the beginning of the 20th century, who transformed it into a modern mill in 1930. Further innovations were made in 1948 and 1960. In 1989 a new mill was built next to the old one and the company had four employees. The work still exists today.

In 1890 a forestry business with an attached sawmill was set up. The Courbin sawmill was expanded in 1920 to include a workshop for the production of boxes for packaging food. After a fire in 1956, the factory was rebuilt and enlarged in 1957. The plant has been supplying companies across France and the European Economic Community since 1985 . In 1989 the factory, which still exists today, employed 50 people.
