Mountbatten-Windsor is the personal surname (family name) of the descendants of Queen Elizabeth II of Great Britain and Northern Ireland from her marriage to Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh in 1947 .

Origin of the name components

Windsor

The name of the British royal family has been Windsor since July 17, 1917 . By a decree signed that day, King George V renounced all German titles for himself and his family and called on his relatives living in the United Kingdom to do the same. At the same time, George V adopted the name Windsor, derived from Windsor Castle , for himself and his family instead of the previous name Sachsen-Coburg and Gotha (or its anglicized form Saxe-Coburg and Gotha ), which the descendants from the February 10, 1840 closed marriage of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha had previously borne. Any descendants of the British monarchs before Queen Victoria were not affected by the provisions of the decree of George V.

The name change in 1917 was due to domestic political pressure during the First World War to emphasize the patriotic orientation of the British royal family and to reduce the importance of their German ancestry and their kinship with a ruling princely house of the German Empire in public opinion.

Mountbatten

On November 20, 1947, Princess Elizabeth of Great Britain and Northern Ireland , the daughter and heir to the throne of the British King George VI. , the marriage to Lieutenant Philip Mountbatten, who of George VI. Received the title of Duke of Edinburgh on the wedding day .

As the son of Prince Andreas of Greece and Denmark from the House of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glücksburg and Princess Alice von Battenberg , Philip was a born Prince of Greece and Denmark. To marry Princess Elizabeth of Great Britain and Northern Ireland in 1947, he had to accept British citizenship , renounced his previous titles and took the surname Mountbatten , which his mother's family had had since 1917. A native of Hesse British Admiral Prince Louis of Battenberg , his maternal grandfather, then the invitation of King George V was followed and had his Hessian title as Prince of Battenberg stored and instead the surname Mountbatten accepted (later he became the Marquess of Milford Haven appointed ). His son Louis , uncle Philips, was also an important British admiral.

On February 22, 1957, Elizabeth II also awarded her husband the title of Prince of Great Britain and Northern Ireland .

Mountbatten-Windsor

In February 1960, Elizabeth II announced that "Mountbatten-Windsor" was the surname of her descendants from her marriage to Prince Philip. Nonetheless, Windsor remains the official name of the royal family; the name change does not apply to the descendants of members of the royal family who are not descended from the queen.

In her announcement, Elizabeth II also announced that the surname Mountbatten-Windsor would be carried by all of her descendants if they do not have the title His or Her Royal Highness or Prince or Princess or - if they are female - marry and be with them take her husband's name.

The heir to the throne ( Charles Mountbatten-Windsor ) then comes from the House of Mountbatten-Windsor , instead of his father's family, the royal Greek branch of the house of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glücksburg , a side branch in turn of the entire Oldenburg house , to which he nevertheless belongs dynastically in the male line . Charles' "artificial" maternal surname Windsor is actually preceded by the surname of his paternal grandmother, Alice von Battenberg , which is genealogically somewhat confusing .
