The Mud is an approximately 25 km long left and southern tributary of the Main . Its upper course is also called Mudau or Mudbach .

The river Mud rises in the eastern Odenwald west of Mudau at an altitude of about 500  m above sea level. NHN . However, this upper course is often dry, so that the stream bed only flows from the water treading facility in Mudau.

The Mud in Miltenberg

The Mud then flows through the Ünglertal in a steady northerly course . The slightly longer Gabelbach flows to the east of Kirchzell . In Amorbach , below the Gotthardsberg (304 m), its largest tributary flows from the right, the Billbach .

The Mud flows through Weilbach and Breitendiel and finally flows out at an altitude of about 125  m above sea level. NHN immediately after the Laurentius Chapel near Miltenberg from the left into the Main .

After a run of about 25.4 km with an average bottom gradient of about 15 ‰, the Mud flows about 375 meters below its origin.

Catchment area

The 408.2 km² catchment area of ​​the Mud belongs partly to the sandstone Odenwald , partly to the sandstone Spessart and is drained from it via the Main and the Rhine to the North Sea.

The source and upper reaches of the Mud are in the Neckar-Odenwald district in Baden-Württemberg , the middle and lower reaches of the Miltenberg district in Bavaria .

Flood (retention)

For a few years now, extensive flood protection measures have been carried out immediately before it flows into the Main; the majority of it has been completed since the end of 2009.

In the mud , brown trout , brown lamprey , brook loach , minnow , perch , gudgeon , Mühlkoppe , pike , rainbow trout and roach as well as the native crayfish can be found.

particularities

In December 2009 a three-year-old girl drowned under mysterious circumstances not far from the confluence with the Main.
