In the kingdom of phylloxera is an Austrian television film by Harald Sicherheitsitz and the first part of the three-part series Courageous in the New Times , which in each episode focuses on ten years of Austrian history after the Second World War. The film was produced by Kurt Mrkwicka's film company MR Film in 2005 for ORF 2 in collaboration with Arte . The world premiere was on October 26, 2005 on ORF 2. The filming locations were in the vicinity of Vienna and the filming period ran from June to early August 2005.
action
The film uses the interwoven fate of three different families (workers, aristocrats and Jewish industrialists) to focus on the post-war period in Vienna between 1953 and 1955.
Elfi Redlich's husband went missing on the Eastern Front in 1942. The seamstress works hard to support her two children. She now has a partnership with US officer Hal, who has also assumed the role of father for the children. Due to the state treaty under negotiation, the American troops will soon withdraw, and Elfi wonders whether she and her children should go with Hal.
When delivering a wedding dress for the wedding of the young Countess Valerie Ulmendorff with the Hungarian nobleman Ferencz Tamasy, she meets Valerie's uncle, the machine manufacturer Johann Ulmendorff, and his employee Otto Hasak. A short time later, Ulmendorff was arrested in the Soviet sector. Since Elfi had recently observed a confidential conversation between Hasak and a Russian officer, she considers him to be an informer.
After Ulmendorff's arrest, Hasak takes over the management of the factory. Surprisingly, the actual owner, the Jew Paul Berkowitz, returns to Vienna with his wife from Israel. Ulmendorff had only taken over the machine factory for the war period and then returned it. Precautions had already been taken for this. It turns out that Hasak worked with a Russian-Austrian smuggling mafia. Since he cannot keep his agreements, he gets into life-threatening difficulties. But the company is also having difficulties. A wave of Stalinist purges eliminated important contacts in Russia, threatening to collapse a large business with German trading partners.
The film shows the difficulties in the new times in different social circumstances.
