The Besenhorster Sandberge and Elbe Sandwiesen are a nature reserve in the Duchy of Lauenburg in Schleswig-Holstein . The nature reserve is characterized by its dry, lime-rich sand lawn , its dunes and silver grass meadows and its old oak forests. It is part of the European ecological network Natura 2000 . It connects directly to the Hamburg nature reserve Borghorster Elbe landscape .

Special characteristics

The nature reserve has not been subject to the natural dynamics of a river valley since the Geesthacht lock was built in 1955. In the flood troughs, however, the water rises during high tide, although they are separated from the Elbe by a dike. Basically there is a small-scale change from wet to dry locations. A number of species can be found here that are otherwise typical of more continental climates. Grazing and mowing should prevent the nature reserve from becoming forested.

There are numerous ruins of the former powder factory in Düneberg on the grounds of the nature reserve .

flora

In the nature reserve, carnation , stonecrop , rock stonecrop can be found among others . In the more humid locations there are burnt cones , meadow gold star and field man litter .

fauna

There are several species of locusts in the area. The Striped Zartschrecke has accordance with current findings here its North westernmost occurrence in Germany. The area is used by numerous species of birds, especially in winter. The nightingale , small woodpecker and green woodpecker are also found as breeding birds . Both inland dunes and lowlands are important habitats for the woodlark and the red- backed shrike and are marked as a bird sanctuary. The removal of trees, grazing and mowing prevent the dunes and meadows from being completely forested, so that ideal feeding and breeding conditions are created.
