The Nebel is a right, partly canalised tributary of the Warnow in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania .

River course

River Nebel and Lower Warnow
Upper fog in Linstow

The fog has its source in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania in the Mecklenburg Lake District district southeast of Lake Krakow in the Nossentiner / Schwinzer Heide nature reserve . The source is the Malkwitz Lake, located about 13 kilometers north of Malchow in the municipality of Hohen Wangelin . The MV Water Framework Directive regards a ditch that rises about 1.2 kilometers south of the lake and leads into the lake as a source of fog.

From the Malkwitz lake, the fog runs through a wooded and hilly landscape as well as through boggy and swampy areas. It first flows through smaller lakes - Kraazer See , Hof- , Orth- and Linstower See - and then passes under the Federal Highway 19 . Near Dobbin the river flows into the Krakower See , on which the city of Krakow am See lies. The fog leaves the lake in its northeastern tip near Serrahn . From there, it makes its way in a north-easterly direction through the fog- breakthrough valley , in which a terminal moraine is broken through in a mountainous landscape. Then the Nebel reaches Güstrow , the largest place on the river.

The Nebel flows westward from Güstrow and then flows into the Warnow at Bützow . The right-hand Bützow-Güstrow Canal was built parallel to the strongly winding natural lower course from 1894 to 1896 . Shortly before the confluence with the Warnow, the natural course and the former shipping route are reunited.

Watershed

The fog source is located on the North Sea-Baltic Sea watershed . This means that the short streams and ditches that arise on the southern side of the ridge between Malkwitzer- and Fleesensee flow over the Elde and Elbe into the North Sea , while the Nebel flows over the Warnow into the Baltic Sea.

history

Source lake of the Nebel was originally the Kraazer See. The connection to the once outflowless lake Malkwitz, 500 meters to the west and higher, was created at the time of German settlement.

Between 1894 and 1896, the Bützow-Güstrow Canal was built between Güstrow and Bützow, parallel to the Alten Nebel. In Güstrow itself, the Nebel was straightened and diverted in the 1970s to make room for the construction of the Liebnitz Bridge.

By 2008, the course of the river at Hoppenrade was renatured by relocation in a new bed laid in loops and lengthened by around one kilometer. This section was straightened during the GDR era. Floodplains were created to the left and right of the new river bed.

Flora and fauna

The Nebel is one of the cleanest and most biodiverse rivers in Mecklenburg . Many species of fish are native here, u. a. Eel , grayling , brook lamprey , perch , chub , minnows , pike , loach and wolffish . So far, 29 native fish species have been found in the river. Rare butterflies , dragonflies , underwater insects and mussels have their habitat here. Kingfisher , gray wagtail and dipper as well as otters live in the water.

Mistbreak Valley

Mist breakthrough valley between Serrahn and Kuchelmiß

From the exit from Krakower See to Klueß , the Nebel has been secured over a length of around 20 kilometers as a nature reserve Nebel . Between Serrahn and Kuchelmiß, part of the breakthrough valley has been developed for tourism. The Nebel here has the character of a mountain stream with stretches of scree, rocks, fallen trees and steep banks. Over a length of four kilometers, it has a gradient of 14 meters. Between the inclines there are strongly meandering sections of the river, embedded in swamp forests and meadows that are very species-rich.

In the breakthrough valley there is also the Kuchelmiß watermill , which was built in 1558. Today it is a monument and a museum.
