Neftegorsk ( Russian Нефтегорск ) is a city in Samara Oblast ( Russia ) with 19,254 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).

geography

The city is located about 100 km southeast of the Oblast capital Samara on the left bank of the Sjesschaja , a left tributary of the Samara which flows into the Volga .

Neftegorsk is the administrative center of the raion of the same name .

The closest railway station is Bogatoje, 36 kilometers away on the Samara– Orenburg line .

history

Neftegorsk was established in 1960 as a workers' settlement near an oil deposit , received urban-type settlement status in 1966 and town charter in 1989. The name is derived from the Russian neft for petroleum .

Neftegorsk is one of the centers of oil and gas production (through Samaraneftegas , Bogatovskneft area ) of Samara Oblast. Oil and gas are also processed in several nearby refineries . There are also companies in the food industry; in the area agriculture.
