List of cities in Russia

Tschapajewsk ( Russian Чапа́евск ) is a Russian city with 72,692 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010) in the Samara Oblast . It is located 43 kilometers southwest of the regional capital Samara on the Chapayevka , a tributary of the Volga . From 1927 to 1929 the city was named Trozk ( Троцк ).

history

Chapayevsk came into being at the beginning of the 20th century when the Russian military began building an explosives factory near the present city in 1909. Just two years later, a chemical factory was built there , the main aim of which was to develop chemical weapons . For several decades since then, the city's name has been inextricably linked to Russian chemical weapons production. Factory expansions and the establishment of new factories during the First World War led to the establishment of the Iwaschtschenkowo workers' settlement . This received the status of a city on August 23, 1927 and, like several other smaller settlements, was renamed Trozk in honor of the revolutionary and ideologist Leon Trotsky (Russian spelling Trozki ) . Almost two years later it was renamed Tschapajewsk again , on the occasion of the tenth anniversary of the death of military leader Vasily Tschapajew . In the next few years the city grew continuously to include new industrial companies and housing developments; even after the Second World War , the development towards an industrial city continued.

environmental pollution

Chapayevsk is still rich in industry, represented in particular by the Polymer chemical plant , which was involved in the production of Soviet chemical weapons until the mid-20th century. Even today, the plant is considered one of the region's biggest polluters, which led to Chapayevsk being declared an ecological emergency area by a UN commission in 1999 .

At a meeting with representatives of the Kremlin in April 2008, the then mayor of Chapayevsk Nikolai Malachow announced that he would close the city and relocate the entire population. Due to the great environmental pollution caused by the now closed arms factories, three times more people die of cancer and tuberculosis in the city than in the rest of Samara Oblast.
