Nehatu (German Nehhat ) is a village ( Estonian küla ) in the rural municipality of Lääneranna in Pärnu County (until 2017: rural municipality of Hanila in Lääne County ) in Estonia .

Population and location

The place has 28 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2011). It is nine kilometers east of the port of Virtsu . Today's village was created as a merger of the small settlements of Virita, Vireküla, Äärepere and Nehatu.

court

An independent farm in Nehatu has been documented since 1765. From 1847 he was in one hand with the goods of Paatsalu ( Patzal ) and Illuste ( Illust ). The last private owner before the expropriation in the course of the Estonian land reform in 1919 was the noble Baltic German family Maydell . Gregor von Bochmann (1850–1930), who later became a professor at the Düsseldorf Art Academy , was born on the farm .

The single-storey stone mansion was probably built in the 19th century. It was converted into a two-story residential building in the 20th century. The historical architecture is no longer visible.

Nature reserve

The village gave its name to the Nehatu Nature Reserve ( Nehatu looduskaitseala ), which has existed since 1957. It extends west and south-west of the village center. The reserve, over a thousand hectares in size, primarily serves to protect the fens of Nehatu ( Nehatu soo ). Sea eagles , marsh harriers and cranes can be found there .
