Location of Meimersdorf in Kiel

Meimersdorf is a district in the southwest of the Schleswig-Holstein state capital Kiel . The rural district formed a municipality in the Plön district until 1970 and was administered by the Moorsee Office until then . It covers an area of 770.5 hectares.

structure

Meimersdorf is divided into the districts of Altmeimersdorf and Neumeimersdorf.

The Angerdorf Altmeimersdorf is the seat of numerous agricultural businesses, most of which are grouped around the village square. The village square was originally an undeveloped wetland area , later an area with three ponds shared by the farmers. In the middle of the almond-shaped village square, which is surrounded by trees, there is a striking oak, all around a ring of linden trees. There are only a few thatched roof houses around the village square, most of the farmsteads were modernized at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries.

Northwest of Meimersdorf, the country's first railway line , built between 1842 and 1844, runs between Altona and Kiel. Due to the establishment of the Meimersdorf marshalling yard , the Neumeimersdorf district was built around 1900 northeast of the old village . In 1998, the state development company developed an approximately twenty hectare residential area for around 500 residential units. The area was previously used for agriculture and increased the resident population by around 1500 people. Care was taken to protect the landscape. In addition, a shopping center was set up on federal highway 404 . Since 2005 planning has been continued with the "Garden City Meimersdorf" in the direction of Altmeimersdorf. Part of the new settlement with around 350 residential units, advertised as “green south of Kiel”, has already been implemented. Should the area be built on according to the development plan, the gap between Altmeimersdorf and Neumeimersdorf would be closed. However, the existing hiking trails should be preserved and new ones created. Now that there are no longer any large building plots available in the west of Kiel, the development of the Kiel urban area continues in Meimersdorf.

Economy and Transport

The previously existing stop at the entrance to the Meimersdorf marshalling yard was shut down, while the marshalling yard was expanded. In 2019, the track length was partially extended so that freight trains with a length of up to 740 meters can enter and leave the seaport - hinterland traffic in particular . This is where the freight wagons to and from the Kiel port terminals Ostuferhafen , Norway quay and Schwedenkai are assembled.

Attractions

The Meimersdorfer Friedhof is worth seeing . It was founded in 1902 and covers an area of around 0.7 hectares. It is considered a testimony to traditional burial culture. In particular, the cross-shaped arrangement of the main path and the family graves, some of which are very large, give it the character of a village-rural family cemetery. In 1950 the cemetery was expanded to include a chapel and in 2002 a herb garden .

A visit to the Meimersdorfer Dorfplatz, which is located in the old town center, is also worthwhile. On a few days a year, entertaining festivals and events take place there. With two small ponds and many trees, the place invites you to linger and picnic.
