Neustadt / Harz is a district of the Harztor rural community in the Nordhausen district ( Thuringia ) and a state-approved climatic health resort .

geography

Neustadt is located in the southern Harz , northeast of Nordhausen and until recently belonged to the administrative community Hohnstein / Südharz .

Waters

Through the state-approved health resort (the recognition is limited until 12 December 2029) flows Kappel Bach , also known as Hardt Bach is called, and in the small Wälzebach flows . There is also a gondola pond on the northern edge of the village, where rowing boats are available for hire in summer.

history

In 1372 the place was first mentioned in a document as "Novenstadt" (from Latin novus "new").

Since 1417, the Counts of Stolberg owned the castle and office of Hohnstein .

In 1485 the town was able to build a town hall, received market and brewing rights and was allowed to erect and fortify a statue of Roland as a sign of its own jurisdiction .

During the Thirty Years War, an imperial army besieged Hohnstein Castle and destroyed it by setting fire to it (1627).

A major fire destroyed Neustadt almost completely on September 10, 1678; only three houses survived the disaster.

As a replacement for the burned down "Old Castle", the Counts of Stolberg had the "New Castle of Neustadt" built in classicism style on an older manor in 1744 . It became the seat of the administration of the Hohnstein Office with court, consistory and district forester. Five craft guilds had their headquarters in Neustadt. In addition, forestry and mining (initially on copper slate, then in the 18th and 19th centuries on hard coal) played a major role.

In the second half of the 19th century, the place lost all its offices and was assigned to the Ilfeld district in the province of Hanover .

Tourism developed in the 19th century. A spa house was built in 1870 and a bathhouse eight years later. From 1887 Hermann Kronberg ran a sanatorium based on a naturopathic treatment. Neustadt has been able to call itself a climatic health resort since 1890 . In 1908 Hermann Löns stayed in Neustadt as a spa guest, a memorial stone commemorates this. In 1929, under Georg Steinhoff, a second sanatorium was built on Burgstrasse.

In 1945, under Soviet occupation, the palace and domain of the Princes zu Stolberg were expropriated without compensation.

The club life in Neustadt was and is very pronounced with the carnival club, the folk choir, the fire brigade and various sports clubs. Tourism became even more important. A forest pool, a gondola pond and six holiday settlements were created.

Due to the union with the neighboring municipality of Osterode , which came into effect on July 1, 1950, Neustadt exceeded the population of 1000 for the first time.

After the fall of the Wall, the hotels were renovated and new cafes and restaurants opened. The infrastructure of the place with new road construction and central sewer system was expanded. Well-developed walking and hiking trails have been laid out by the Harz Club.

In December 2014, the place was recognized as a "climatic health resort" (limited until December 12, 2029).

On July 6, 2018, Neustadt was incorporated into the Harztor community.

It was the administrative seat of the Hohnstein Office until 1866, and was owned by the Princes of Stolberg-Stolberg until 1945. The Soviet occupying power wanted to demolish the mansion according to “Order 209” of the SMAD, but this could be prevented through the use of Neustadt personalities. From 1945 the mansion was then a boarding school for the kindergarten teachers' school, the institute for teacher training and until 1986 Neustädter elementary school. It is empty (2014) and shows signs of decay.

The near and far surroundings of Neustadt are rich in sights, all of which are accessible via hiking trails. Of the three castle ruins, the Hohnstein castle ruins are the most significant as one of the oldest structures in the entire Harz region. It is also worth visiting the recently renovated and listed Neustadt drinking water reservoir (also often referred to as the Nordhäuser reservoir), which is only about six kilometers from the village. There is also a separate forest pool not far from the village, as well as the Poppenberg ( 601  m above sea  level ), with which the Hochharz already begins.
