The Catholic parish church Notre-Dame-de-Croaz-Batz (also Notre-Dame-de-Croas-Batz ) in Roscoff , a municipality in the Finistère department in the French region of Brittany , was founded at the suggestion of the town's merchants and shipowners Erected in the Flamboyant Gothic style in the middle of the 16th century . The name of the church, Our Lady of the Cross of Batz, recalls its location near the landing stage on the island of Batz , where a cross used to stand. In 1886, the church, which belongs to an enclosed parish with a surrounding wall and two ossuary from the 16th and 17th centuries, was added to the list of architectural monuments in France as a monument historique .

history

The Notre-Dame-de-Croaz-Batz church was built between 1515 and 1549. In 1575/76 the mighty bell tower was built in the Renaissance style . The western vestibule also dates from the 16th century. Today's choir , which has just been closed, was built around 1609, with sound-reinforcing cavities built into its side walls. In 1610 wooden ceilings were drawn in under the roof structure throughout the interior. The southern porch was replaced in 1634 by a chapel consecrated to St. Joseph , on the gable side of which a sundial is painted with the inscription "CRAIGNEZ LA DERNIÈRE" (Fears the Last). In 1639 the sacristy was added and the stone enclosure built. The holy water font in the surrounding wall, the water of which was sprinkled over the graves, is a reminder of the cemetery that was abandoned in 1833. In 1701, the Chapelle des Agonisants (Chapel of the Dying) was added to the north aisle . In 1777 the interior was partially redesigned.

architecture

Exterior construction

On the outside walls of the church are several reliefs carved in granite depicting caravels , reminding of the importance of merchant shipping for Roscoff. The numerous corner stones are decorated with depictions of animals and human figures. The transition from the central nave to the choir is crowned by a graceful roof turret , to which a narrow granite staircase leads.

The bell tower is flanked on both sides by slender round towers and has two bell floors surrounded by balustrades, which are crowned by two superimposed lanterns . The portal of the western vestibule is framed by arched archivolts studded with crabs . On the keystone of the rib vault of the vestibule you can see an angel with the coats of arms of France and Brittany, a lily and an ermine . The space above this vestibule was previously used for council meetings.

inner space

The three-aisled nave is divided into five bays . High, pointed arcades , resting on columns without capitals , separate the central nave from the two side aisles; a wide pointed arch opens it up to the choir.

The wooden ceilings are supported by painted and carved beams. Vine ornaments, grotesque masks, vases with flowers, angels making music and holding banners, putti and heads, acrobats, animals and mythical creatures are depicted on the beams. The ends of the beams are designed as the mouths of monsters. The end pieces of the supporting beams are carved with the allegorical figures of the sun and moon and with numerous figures of saints and their attributes .

Mourning ribbons

During the restoration in 2000/01, the painted mourning ribbons ( liter funéraire ) on the walls above the arcades were exposed again. The ribbons with the coats of arms of high-ranking personalities were painted in black after their death.

Furnishing

Madonna from the 14th century
  • The six-column main altar, like the side altars, dates from the Baroque period. On the altarpiece you can see St. Dominic and St. Catherine of Siena receiving the rosary from Our Lady . The secrets of the rosary are depicted in the 15 medallions. The apostles Peter and Paul stand to one side .
  • The pulpit , carved from oak and chestnut wood, dates from 1711. The four evangelists are depicted on the pulpit, the reliefs at the pulpit staircase depict St. Anne and St. Joachim , the Passage of the Virgin Mary and the Annunciation . An angel with a trumpet stands on the sound cover .
  • The font is dated to the 16th century. It consists of two granite basins , in the larger one the baptismal water was kept, and above the smaller basin was baptized. This had a drain that led the water directly into the ground. The baptismal font stands under a wood-carved canopy from 1690, which rests on eight columns and is crowned by a dome with an angel figure.
  • In 1963, seven alabaster panels with scenes from the life of Jesus were installed in the modern altar in the Joseph's Chapel . The reliefs come from Nottingham and are dated to the late 15th century. Three of the panels with the scenes of the Annunciation, the Adoration of the Magi and the Resurrection were stolen in 1981 and found again in 2005. The scenes of the flagellation of Christ, the crucifixion, the ascension and the Pentecost scene are preserved in the altar.
  • The colored wooden sculpture of the Madonna and Child is a work from the 14th century. Mary holds the baby Jesus in her arms, who plays with her veil and turns his left foot backwards.

organ

The organ stage from the years 1606 to 1610 goes back to the old organ created by John Bourne. It is decorated with the sculptures of prophets and the bas-reliefs of the Sibyls . The organ prospectus was executed by Yves Richard in 1649. The organ was replaced in 1650 by Thomas Harrisson and Robert Dallam and in 1888 by an instrument made by the organ building company Claus from Rennes. In 1985 it was renewed by Jean Renaud.
