In this competition there was a triple success for the shot putter of the GDR. European champion was Dieter Hoffmann . He won ahead of Heinz-Joachim Rothenburg . Bronze went to the European record holder, Hans-Peter Gies .

22 participants competed in two groups for a qualifying round. The qualification distance for the direct entry into the final was 18.80 m. Since only seven athletes exceeded this mark (highlighted in light blue), the final field was filled with the next best placed athletes to twelve throwers (highlighted in light green). So finally 18.41 m was enough for the final.
