Oleksiy Torochtiy

Oleksij Pavlovych Torochtij ( Ukrainian Олексій Павлович Торохтій ; born May 22, 1986 in Suhres , Donetsk Oblast , Ukrainian SSR ) is a Ukrainian weightlifter . In 2012 he won the Olympic gold medal in the heavyweight division, but this was seven years to him later for doping disallowed .

Career

Oleksij Torochtij started lifting weights at his school in Suhres at the age of 14 and is now a member of Dinamo Kharkiv . His coaches were or are Valeri Nikulin and Mikhail Mazocha. He is a student at the National Aviation University in Kharkiv .

He made his first appearance in an international championship at the European Junior Championships for the U 17 age group in 2003 in Dortmund . He came there in the weight class up to 94 kg with a duel of 300 kg (135-165) on the 4th place. Until 2006 he started in a number of other international championships in the junior area. The best place he achieved was 2nd place at the European Junior Championships (U 20) in 2006 in Palermo . He lifted there in a duel in the heavyweight 365 kg (165-200). In Hangzhou , China , he reached a 4th place at the Junior World Championships in 2006. There he weighed 369 kg (166–203) and was only 10 kg behind the performance of the heavyweight winner Igor Merkuschow, Russia, who weighed 379 kg (171 –208) came.

In 2006 Oleksij Torochtij was used at the Senior World Championships in Santo Domingo. He achieved there in the heavyweight duel 373 kg (165-209) and thus finished 12th. World champion was in Santo Domingo in this weight class Marcin Dolega from Poland, who brought 415 kg (193-222) to the high distance. In 2007 Oleksij Torochtij started at the World Championships in Chiang Mai / Thailand. There he made three failed attempts with 167 kg in the snatch, so that he remained without a duel and thus unplaced. This was the only "total failure" he suffered in his international weightlifting career.

He made a big leap in performance in the winter of 2007/08. This was shown at the European Championships in Lignano in April 2008. He achieved there in the heavyweight duel 395 kg (175-220), with which he came in 5th place. The winner Dmitri Berestow from Russia achieved 410 kg (190-220). With his performance in the push of 220 kg, he won the first medal of his international career, a silver. He was then used at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, but only reached 390 kg (177-213), which reached 12th place.

In 2009 Oleksij Torochtij was at the European Championships in Bucharest with 405 kg (181-224) behind Vladimir Smortschkow from Russia, 411 kg (190-221) vice European champion in a duel and secured his first European title with his performance in pushing (224 kg) . At the 2009 World Championships in Goyang , he only weighed 395 kg (180–215) and just missed the medal ranks with a 4th place in a duel. World champion was there again Marcin Dolega, who came to 421 kg (195-226).

In 2010 he was only at the European Championships in Minsk at the start and achieved there 396 kg (175-221) in a duel, with which he won the bronze medal. With his performance in pushing of 221 kg, he won a silver medal. The Russians Dmitri Klokow , 409 kg (185–224) and Vladimir Smortschkow, 408 kg (193–215) could not be endangered. At the European Championships in 2011 in Kazan he came to 385 kg (170-215) in a duel and thus only reached 5th place. After all, he won an EM bronze medal with his shock performance of 215 kg. He was in better shape at the 2011 World Cup in Paris . He increased there in the heavyweight division again to 410 kg (181-229) and thus took 3rd place in the duel ranking. With his shock performance of 229 kg he also won a bronze medal in the World Championships. Before him, the Russians Chadschimurat Akkajew , 430 kg (198-232) and Dimitri Klokow, 428 kg (196-232) placed in Paris .

The supposed high point of his career was the 2012 Olympic Games in London. He achieved there in a duel 412 kg (185-227), which were enough to win the Olympic gold medal. However, the Russian weightlifters who had dominated this weight class in previous years (Klokow, Smortschkow, Akkajew, Berestow) were not at the start, which led to some speculation. In 2013 Torocthij does not contest any international competitions. Based on the test results of doping samples taken at the 2012 Olympic Games in London, he and four other weightlifters were suspended by the world association IMF on December 23, 2018 . Finally, the IOC recognized him from his Olympic victory on December 19, 2019.
