Olympic city
An Olympic city is a city that currently or previously hosts the Summer Olympics or the Winter Olympics . While the ancient Olympic Games were always held in Greece, the modern games are held in a different city every four years.
The previous German Olympic cities are Berlin ( canceled in 1916 because of the First World War , 1936) and Munich (1972) for the Summer Games and Garmisch-Partenkirchen ( canceled in 1936, 1940 because of the Second World War ) for the Winter Games. Berlin and Munich each have an Olympic stadium . Kiel , where the sailing competitions of the Olympic Summer Games took place in 1936 and 1972, and Augsburg , where the canoe slalom was held in the ice canal in 1972 , are not Olympic cities, as the IOC never assigned the Olympic Games to them.
The only Olympic city in Austria so far is Innsbruck , which hosted the Olympic Winter Games in 1964 and 1976.
Switzerland , too, has so far only had one Olympic city with St. Moritz , where the Olympic Winter Games were held in 1928 and 1948.
The name Olympic City should not be confused with the Olympic Village .
Baden-Baden has been an Olympic city since 1997 . Baden-Baden was honored with this title by the International Olympic Committee - also in recognition of the nomination congress held there in 1981, at which the two cities of Calgary (Canada) and Seoul (South Korea) were nominated as host cities for the 1988 Olympic Games.

Olympic countries
A less frequently used term is Olympialand (also Olympic state). Greece is considered an Olympic country, which is why the Greek Olympic team has the honor of being the first to enter the stadium for the opening ceremonies (summer and winter games).
