Since Archie Hahn had already won two competitions - the 60- and 200-meter run - he was clearly a favorite. After 20 meters Hahn was already two meters ahead, while Nate Cartmell - very common for him - was last. But Cartmell caught up quickly and landed just under one and a half meters behind Hahn in second place. For Cartmell it was his second silver medal, the first he had won over 200 meters. In third place came William Hogenson, who won his third medal after silver over 60 and bronze over 200 meters.

Lawson Robertson, sixth in the race, later became the coach of the Irish athletics team. In St. Louis he also won bronze in the standing vault.
