With the III. At the 1904 Olympic Games in St. Louis , eleven gymnastics competitions were held. The venue was the infield of the Francis Field Stadium . The program was divided into two parts; on July 1st and 2nd the all- around disciplines were contested (called international gymnastics ), on October 28th the individual equipment disciplines ( AAU Gymnastics Championships ). The latter were actually advertised as American championships of the Amateur Athletic Union . However, since foreigners would also have been eligible to participate, these are also considered Olympic.

The individual all-around event consisted of twelve parts, the individual results of which were added up. The nine gymnastics exercises included two compulsory exercises and one freestyle exercise on parallel bars , on horizontal bars and on horse jumping . There were also three disciplines of athletics: long jump , shot put and a run over 100 yards (91.44 m). The first five places were participants from Central Europe.
A maximum of 15 points could be achieved on each gymnastics device. Guideline values were used for the athletic exercises (5.48 meters in the long jump, 9.14 meters in the shot put and 11.0 seconds in the 100-yard run). If they were achieved, ten points were awarded, but better performance was not taken into account.
