The men's long jump at the 1960 Olympic Games in Rome was held on September 2, 1960 at the Stadio Olimpico . 49 athletes took part.

Olympic champion was the American Ralph Boston ahead of his compatriot Bo Roberson . The bronze medal went to Igor Ter-Owanesjan from the Soviet Union.

While athletes from Austria and Liechtenstein did not take part, three Germans and one Swiss competed. The German Fritz Köppen could not qualify for the final. Manfred Molzberger and Manfred Steinbach reached the final. Steinbach took fourth place there, four centimeters behind the bronze rank, Molzberger reached ninth place. Switzerland was represented by Gustav Schlosser, who failed in the qualification.

Note: The Olympic record was officially set at 8.06 m and Jesse Owens was the record holder, despite an irregular tailwind when he jumped.

Conducting the competition

The athletes competed in a qualifying round on September 2, which was conducted in three groups. The required qualification width was 7.40 m. For all qualified jumpers the final took place on the afternoon of the same day. Each participant was initially entitled to three attempts. The best six athletes could then complete three more attempts.

13 participants had achieved the qualifying distance of 7.40 m. The favorite was world record holder Ralph Boston from the USA. The main challenger was the Soviet jumper Igor Ter-Owanesjan, European champion from 1958 .
In the second round, Boston's compatriot Bo Roberson took the lead with 8.03 m. In the next attempt, Boston lived up to its role of favorite: he jumped a new Olympic record with 8.12 m and exceeded the 24-year-old mark of his legendary compatriot Jesse Owens .
The placements remained unchanged in the first two finals. Boston led ahead of Roberson and Ter-Owanesjan. He was followed by the German Manfred Steinbach, the Finn Jorma Valkama and Christian Collardot from France. In the last round the ranking was mixed up again. Ter-Owanesjan achieved a new European record with 8.04 m and first took silver, then Roberson countered with 8.11 m and even came within an inch of Boston. Steinbach was the first German to jump over the eight-meter mark with exactly 8.00 m, which ultimately meant fourth place.

In the 14th Olympic final, Ralph Boston jumped to the 13th US victory. It was the eighth US success in a row. At the same time, it was the eleventh US double success, the fourth in a row.
Igor Ter-Owanesjan won the first long jump medal for the Soviet Union.
