India took part in the 1964 Summer Olympics in Tokyo with a delegation of 53 athletes (52 men and one woman) in 42 competitions in eight sports. The only medal success was achieved by the hockey team, which won the tournament. The flag bearer at the opening ceremony was the athlete Gurbachan Singh Randhawa .
