The GDR runner Hoffmeister, reigning European champion from 1974 and Olympic silver medalist from 1972 , was highly rated. But the favorite was the world record holder Tatjana Kasankina, who had won gold over 800 meters four days earlier and was the first woman to break the 4-minute mark in June of the Olympic year.
The final race was approached slowly, the pace only increased gradually and with 300 meters to go the field was close together. Now Kasankina, who had always well positioned and managed her race with an overview, started her sprint and overtook Hoffmeister, who was running in front of her, on the home straight. Tatjana Kasankina won the double over 800 and 1500 meters , silver went to Gunhild Hoffmeister, who was a good half second behind. Seven hundredths of a second behind her, Ulrike Bruns, also from the GDR, won the bronze medal in front of Bulgarian Nikolina Schterewa, who came second over 800 meters. Lyudmila Bragina, the 1972 Olympic champion , came fifth ahead of the Italian Gabriella Dorio and the German Ellen Wellmann, who had to give up the final four years ago - at that time under the name Ellen Tittel.
