The qualification for the tennis competitions at the Summer Olympics in 2020 is primarily about the rankings of the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) and the Women's Tennis Association (WTA).

Qualification criteria

On June 7, 2021, the world rankings will be published by the ATP and WTA, based on the results over a period of one year. Each National Olympic Committee (NOK) may register six male and six female athletes. A maximum of four athletes per country and gender may be used in singles, and a maximum of two pairs per country and gender in doubles.

In the individual competitions, the 56 best players in the world rankings on the WTA and ATP tour will qualify for the Olympic Games on June 7, 2021. A maximum of four athletes per nation are allowed to qualify in this way. Six of the remaining eight places will be awarded to continents: two at the Pan American Games 2019 , one at the Asian Games 2018 , one at the African Games 2019 and one each for Europe and Oceania for the top-ranked athlete of a NOK, none of whom are on the ranking list could qualify. In addition, the Japanese delegation as the host country will receive a quota place. The last quota place will be given to a previous Olympic gold medalist or Grand Slam winner.

32 pairs qualify for the double competitions. Up to ten places are reserved for players in the top 10 of the double ranking. The remaining quota places are then assigned to double pairs with the best combined ranking position until 24 pairs are qualified. If the quota of 86 players of the respective gender has not yet been reached, additional places will be allocated via the combined ranking. Once the quota is reached, the remaining spots with both individual qualified players will be selected based on their best combined placement. If this results in fewer than 32 doubles pairs, doubles with a player who qualified as a single player will be allocated additional spots. If necessary, followed by remaining doubles with no players who qualified as singles. In addition, Japan as the host nation is also entitled to a starting place.

There are no quota places available for mixed doubles. Instead, they must consist of players who have already qualified for singles or doubles. The top 15 of the combined double rankings and the host country will thus qualify.
