Otto Arthur Moritz von Grünewaldt ( Russian : Артур Александрович фон Гринвальд; born March 12, 1847 in Orrisaar ( Estonia ); † July 13, 1922 in Reval ) was a German-Baltic nobleman , stableman at the imperial court in Saint Petersburg and general of the cavalry .

Life

Otto Arthur attended the Knights and Cathedral School in Reval from 1860 to 1864 , after which he studied three semesters of camera science at the University of Dorpat until 1866 . His military career began in 1866 as cornet in Cuirassier - Regiment of the Russian Tsar . In this regiment, which was part of the tsar's bodyguard , he served until 1870 and was transferred to the Semiretschensk Cossack army in the rank of captain . With these Cossack troops , he had now been appointed Jessaul , he fought in the Kuldschag area in 1871 . In recognition of his military bravery , he received two high Russian awards and was promoted to major . In 1873 he took command of a hundred Cossacks and was deployed under the command of General Konstantin Petrovich von Kaufmann in the Khiva campaign . Again he distinguished himself for outstanding bravery, he was highly decorated and promoted to lieutenant colonel in 1874 . For a short period of time he commanded training units and was appointed regimental commander of the 2nd Semiretschenk Cossack regiment in May 1874 and of the 1st Semiretschenk Cossack regiment in October 1874. When he was promoted to colonel in 1879, he became commander of the cavalry regiment in the Semiretschensk Cossack army.

From 1884 to 1892 he commanded the 30th Saxe-Weimar Dragoon Regiment of the Grand Duke of Saxe-Weimar Carl Alexander , which was stationed in Ingushetia . In February 1892 he was promoted to major general and now led the Imperial Russian Cavalry Regiment. As its commander, he took part in the coronation of the Russian tsars and emperors on May 14, 1896 # Coronation of Tsar Nicholas II and Alexandra Feodorovna and was largely responsible for the tsarina's bodyguard. After the coronation ceremony, the tsar thanked Otto Moritz v. G., he had the honorary uniform presented to him and authorized the Foreign Office to register him as his Majesty's personal entourage .

In November 1896 he was appointed commander of the 1st Brigade of the 1st Guards Cavalry Division and in 1897 was appointed court stableman, in this capacity he was responsible for horse breeding and in 1901 became a member of the board of the head office of state breeding. On December 6, 1899 he became lieutenant general , in 1904 he was given the honorary title adjutant general . In 1912 he was appointed chief stableman and promoted to general of the cavalry . From 1913 he was also chairman of the field hospitals committee . After the October Revolution of 1917, General Grünewaldt was dismissed from the Russian army and from all leading positions, losing his rank. He retired to Estonia and lived on the family estate. He died on July 13, 1922 in Tallinn in the Zevald sanatorium and was buried in the family grave on the Orrisaar estate.

Origin and family

Otto Arthur v. G. came from the German-Baltic noble family von Grünewaldt . His father was the Estonian district administrator Alexander Georg Friedrich von Grünewaldt (1805 - 1886), who was married to Pauline von Ungern-Sternberg (1817 - 1852) in his first marriage . In 1883 Otto Arthur married Marie Anna Countess Tiesenhausen (1851 - 1923), they had no descendants.
