Christoph Johann Friedrich Otto von Zieten (born September 14, 1747 in Garz ; † September 12, 1817 in Groß-Spiegelberg ) was a Prussian lieutenant general , chief of the East Prussian cuirassier regiment , governor of Königsberg and heir to Wildberg .

Life

His parents were the Prussian major and heir on Wildberg Balthasar Joachim von Zieten (* May 20, 1706 - October 12, 1758) and his wife Karoline Luise Johanna, née von Quast (* May 23, 1728 - December 15, 1802) from the Garz house. His brother, Lieutenant Colonel Hans Balthasar von Zieten (March 11, 1753, † April 1, 1833) was married to Albertine von Zieten, the daughter of General Hans Joachim von Zieten .

Military career

Zieten went on January 15, 1762 as a Junker in the dragoons regiment "von Bayreuth" and on April 4, 1763 was promoted to second lieutenant . On April 10, 1778 he became general adjutant to General von Bülow , the second chief of the regiment. In the War of the Bavarian Succession , Zieten fought in the battles near Jägerndorf and Ratiborgetz. On June 10, 1779 he was recruited into the regiment. By July 1790 he rose to major with a patent from May 24, 1790 and two years later became squadron chief .

In the First Coalition War Zieten fought in the cannonade of Valmy and in the battles near Hochheim, Kreuznach , Weißenburg and the sieges of Verdun and Landau . For his behavior in the battle of Kaiserslautern he received the order Pour le Mérite . On July 8, 1798 he became a lieutenant colonel with a patent from May 20, 1800. On May 11, 1803, Zieten rose as a colonel to the command of the 2nd battalion and on August 25, 1806 was appointed commander of the "Queen" dragoon regiment. In this position he took part in the Battle of Auerstedt during the Fourth Coalition War, was wounded while retreating in the battles at Zehdenick and Heilsberg and was still fighting at Wuhsen on the Passarge .

From January 30th to March 19th, 1807 Zieten was chief of the two newly formed Dragoon Brigades. Then King Friedrich Wilhelm III appointed him . head of the "Auer" dragoon regiment and promoted him three months later to major general . On November 8, 1807, Zieten became chief of the newly formed East Prussian Cuirassier Regiment. For his work in the Battle of Heilsberg he was awarded the Russian Order of St. Anna 1st Class on August 5, 1808 .

On November 25, 1811, Zieten was appointed brigadier of the East Prussian cavalry. He gave up this command on March 18, 1811 when he was appointed commandant of Königsberg. Two days later, the king decided that Zieten should continue to be head of the East Prussian Cuirassier Regiment. But on November 26, 1811 he was commissioned by the General von York to take over the business of the governor of Konigsberg. On March 24, 1812, he was promoted to lieutenant general. After the Wars of Liberation , he received the Order of the Red Eagle, 1st class, to celebrate his 50th anniversary in service. On February 12, 1817, he retired with a pension of 2000 thalers. He died on September 12, 1817 on Groß-Spiegelberg in the Prenzlau district. A monument was erected in his honor in the Groß-Spiegelberg cemetery.

Zieten married on November 13, 1783 on Groß-Spiegelberg Marie Luise Amalie von Winterfeldt (* May 4, 1763, † January 16, 1831) from the house of Groß-Spiegelberg. She was the daughter of Ernst Friedrich von Winterfeldt (* May 15, 1733; † March 21, 1795) and his wife Luise Elisabeth Tugendreich von Stolz (* July 28, 1739; † July 7, 1809). The couple had several children including:
