The Antola Regional Nature Park ( Parco naturale regional dell'Antola in Italian ) is located in the Genoese hinterland in front of the Apennines of the Italian region of Liguria . The 4837 hectare territory of the nature reserve lies entirely in the metropolitan city of Genoa and borders the Piedmontese province of Alessandria to the north and the province of Parma of the Emilia-Romagna region to the east .

Specifications

The park was established on February 22, 1995 by means of regional law number 12 with a total area of 4837 hectares. Two Comunità Montane (a political union of several mountain communities) belong to it : the Comunità Montana Alta Valle Scrivia and the Comunità Montana Alta Val Trebbia . The administrative seat of the Antola Natural Park is in the municipality of Busalla .

The municipalities of Busalla, Crocefieschi , Fascia , Gorreto , Montebruno , Propata , Ronco Scrivia , Rondanina , Savignone , Torriglia , Valbrevenna and Vobbia are located on the territory of the nature reserve .

structure

The nature park is divided into the following zones:

  • General, directed reserve ( Riserva generale orientata - Zone B): this includes the Rocche del Reopasso , which in turn belongs to the Oasi del Reopasso (with an area of 1331 hectares); they make an interesting rock formation
  • Protected area ( Area di Protezione - Zone C): includes the most important areas of the park in terms of environment, nature, art and tradition
  • Development area ( Area di Sviluppo - Zone D): in this zone there are various attractions such as the summit of Monte Reale , the Vobbia river , Castello della Pietra , the Val Brevenna ecomuseum , the summit of Monte Antola, Lake Brugneto and the Casa del Romano observatory
  • Connection area: the adjacent areas that form a functional unit with the park are the localities of Pentema , Senarega and Chiappa .

The subdivision of the nature park is intended to enable greater efficiency in terms of protection and development support, with maximum visitor capacity. In the Riserva Generale Orientata, nature should be able to develop, but is guided into a certain landscape form under human supervision. For example, in this area the advance of a certain type of plant is stopped in order to preserve the original landscape. Intervention in the nature of this reserve section is permitted for this purpose alone.

The Aree di Sviluppo are characterized by a landscape worthy of protection, in which buildings (historical settlements, castles, churches, etc.) of particular interest are integrated. In this area there are often information and service facilities for visitors. The Aree di Protezione, on the other hand, encompass areas of the park that are characterized by human presence. Here you will find smaller villages and agricultural areas of particular historical or scenic value.

In general, it should be mentioned that the specific subdivision of the regional park surfaces into different types of protection is not uniform in Italy and national standardization is still pending.

location

The nature park is dominated by the 1597 meter high Monte Antola , which separates the two main valleys of the park, Val Vobbia and Val Trebbia . In the past centuries this strategic position made the mountain an important trading hub between the communities of the two valleys.

From the mountain top you have a view of the entire Ligurian coast ; Sometimes the Mediterranean island of Corsica can be made out. The panorama from Monte Antola includes the south of the Tuscan Archipelago , to the east the Apennine Mountains to the Apuan Alps , in the west of the Ligurian Riviera di Levante and the Maritime Alps and in the north, the Po Valley with the Alps ( Monte Viso , Mont Blanc and Monte Rosa are the clearest elevations) in the background.

fauna

Mammals

One of the park's greatest attractions is certainly its diversity of mammals . In this context, the Italian wolf ( Canis lupus italicus ) should be mentioned, which in recent history (until the middle of the 21st century there were no indications of its presence in the protected area), especially in the region around Monte Antola, has increased. The main prey of the wolf in the nature park are the fallow deer ( Dama dama ) and the roe deer ( Capreolus capreolus ). Other mammals found in the park are the wild boar ( Sus scrofa ), the fox ( Vulpes vulpes ), the badger ( Meles meles ), the stone marten ( Martes foina ), the weasel ( Mustela nivalis ), the squirrel ( Sciurus vulgaris ), the Dormouse ( Glis glis ), the common dormouse ( Muscardinus avellanarius ) and the brown hare ( Lepus europaeus ). So far, the occurrence of the polecat ( Mustela putorius ) has not been confirmed.

Birds

The avifauna is also of great heterogeneity . Among the birds of prey are the common buzzard ( Buteo buteo ), the kestrel ( Falco tinnunculus ), the sparrowhawk ( Accipiter nisus ) and the honey buzzard ( Pernis apivorus ). The dipper ( Cinclus cinclus ), the little ringed plover ( Charadrius dubius ), the white wagtail ( Motacilla alba ), the yellow wagtail ( Motacilla flava ) and the kingfisher ( Alcedo atthis ) can be observed along the numerous waterways . Other birds are the jay ( Garrulus glandarius ), the red-legged partridge ( Alectoris rufa ) and the green woodpecker ( Picus viridis ).

Fish, amphibians and reptiles

Among the fish are brown trout ( Salmo trutta fario ) and the Strömer ( Leuciscus souffia ) frequently encountered relative. The barbel ( Barbus plebejus ) and the chub ( Leuciscus cephalus ) also occur in the reserve .

The amphibians are of particular interest . In addition to the common salamander ( Salamandra salamandra ), there are now very rare species in the Antola Regional Nature Park. These include the mountain newt Triturus alpestris apuanus , which occurs endemically in the Apennines and the Maritime Alps , the spectacled salamander ( Salamandrina terdigitata ) and the south-west French cave salamander ( Speleomantes strinatii ). The common frog ( Rana temporaria ) and the Italian frog ( Rana italica ) also have their home in the park.

Common reptiles are the aspis viper ( Vipera aspis ) and the viper snake ( Natrix maura ).
