Pey-Yu Chang (2013)

Pei-Yu Chang ( Chinese  张培 豫 , born 1959 in Changhua , Taiwan ) is an Austrian conductor .

Live and act

Pei-Yu Chang's parents came from Henan ( China ). Born and raised in Taiwan, she received her first piano lessons at the age of six . After completing a music education training at the Taiwan Provincial Junior Teachers College in Taichung , she first worked as a music teacher at the elementary school in the fishing village of Fangyuan ( Changhua County ). There she built up a children's choir, which she also conducted and accompanied on the piano, with which she finally won first prize in the national choir competition in Taiwan. This result was based on her own idea of the nature of sound (cf. the idea of the "music of the sky" in Zhuang Zi's philosophy ), which Chang later wrote in her two dissertations at the University of Peking and the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna further developed. The following year, she won first prize again with the choir of the rural Zhongzheng Elementary School in Taichung County .

Letter of recommendation from Zubin Mehta

This event got her to conduct . In 1985 she passed the entrance examination for conducting studies at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna and was accepted into Karl Österreicher's class. In 1989 and 1990 she obtained the diplomas for orchestra and choir conducting. In addition, she deepened her conducting training in master classes by Sergiu Celibidache in Mainz and, with two invitations in 1989 and 1990 as a Fellow of the Tanglewood Music Festival , with Leonard Bernstein , Lorin Maazel and Seiji Ozawa . As part of Bernstein's 1985 world tour, she was the conductor of one of the choirs in his 3rd symphony "Kaddish" . She was one of the semi-finalists at the Arturo Toscanini Competition and an artistic collaboration with Rudolf Barschai developed as a result . In 1994 she worked at the invitation of Zubin Mehta as assistant conductor at the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino , where she then conducted herself. At the invitation of Wolfgang Wagner, she worked as a music assistant at the Bayreuth Festival in 1997 .

In 1994 Chang became an Austrian citizen.

Her goal at that time was to work as a conductor with European orchestras, which for her as a woman, as also emphasized by letters of recommendation from Peter Schneider and Otmar Suitner , was not a matter of course. In the following years she conducted symphony orchestras in Germany ( Munich Radio Orchestra , Göttingen Symphony Orchestra ,), France ( Orchester Colonne ), Italy (Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, Orchestra della Toscana , Orchestra dell'Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia , Haydn Orchestra ), Canada, Switzerland, Austria, the Ukraine and the Czech Republic as well as at opera and concert halls such as the Erfurt Theater , the State Theater on Gärtnerplatz , the Halle Opera House and the Kassel State Theater . In 2000 she won the conducting competition at the Lucerne Theater and subsequently became 1st Kapellmeister there .

Since 1993 Pei-Yu Chang has performed with more than 20 orchestras in China and Taiwan. In China she worked with the Shanghai Broadcasting Symphony Orchestra (since 2004 Shanghai Philharmonic Orchestra ), the Central Philharmonic Orchestra (since 1996 China National Symphony Orchestra), the China National Opera , the Shanghai Opera House , the Beijing Symphony Orchestra , the China National Opera and Dance Drama Theater , the Philharmonic Women's Chamber Orchestra Beijing, and the orchestras from the cities and provinces of Wuhan, Haerbin, Shenyang, Henan, Jiangsu, Kunming, Tianjin, Dalian, Shandong, Xinjiang Inner Mongolia and others. a.

Her motivation and great concern was to convey western classical music, especially Viennese classical music , based on her education and time in Europe as well as working with western maestri and orchestras. With the aim of enriching the cultural life of the people, she toured repeatedly through the outskirts of China. With her work, she made it possible for musicians and orchestras to have equal opportunities with those in the major cities of the coastal region. In Taiwan she conducted the Taipei Symphony Orchestra , the National Symphony Orchestra (Taiwan) and the National Taiwan Symphony Orchestra. In September 1995 she was invited to conduct the opening concert of the World Women's Congress in Beijing. She was then received for a meeting by the then Deputy Prime Minister Li Lanqing in the Diaoyutai State Guest House in Beijing.

In parallel to the mediation of classical European music in China, Chang is also committed to the musical culture exchange between China and Europe, as an “ambassador between two worlds”. In order to promote mutual understanding, she organized a first European tour in November 1997 . This tour with the Shanghai Broadcasting Symphony Orchestra took her as the first Chinese conductor to France, Italy and Switzerland, with a total of ten concerts in the concert halls of the Théâtre du Châtelet and the Salle Pleyel in Paris, in the Victoria Hall in Geneva and in the Sala Verdi in Milan. She took over the complete organization and took care of the financing of the trip. With this tour she fulfilled her great wish that her level as a conductor with the orchestra would be recognized and valued on the international stage just as much as that from the West. In doing so, she applied high musical standards and “her efforts are worthwhile, critics praise the fine sound she elicits from the orchestra.” In Paris she was awarded the Médaille de la Ville de Paris for the occasion . In November 2005, Chang led the Oriental National Symphony Orchestra Xi'an with concerts in Salzburg and Vienna, where she was the first female conductor to appear in the Vienna Musikverein .

In 2006, Chang was honored in honoring outstanding Chinese.

Pei-Yu Chang (2013)

As a visiting conductor and professor at the Central Music Conservatory, the Wuhan Conservatory of Music, Tianjin University. and the University of Macau. From 1999 she was a regular guest conductor at the Xi'an Music Conservatory, where in 2005 she accepted the invitation to a professorship and the engagement as chief conductor of the Oriental Symphony Orchestra. From November 2009 she was a professor at the University of Northeast China in Shenyang . She has been a professor at the Hebei Academy of Fine Arts ( Hebei ) since 2018 .

In addition to her concert activities, she also continued her studies. In 2010 she obtained the title of Magistra der Künste at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna . In 2012 she began her doctoral studies at the Institute of Philosophy at Peking University , where she received her doctorate in 2016 with the thesis "Zhuang Zi's artistic spirit and practical significance - the experience of a symphony conductor". Her motivation for the topic of the dissertation is to pass on her experiences, which she gained through the application of Daoist philosophy , especially the artistic spirit and the practical importance of Zhuang Zi , in conducting. Another source of inspiration and role model for this was Carlos Kleiber , who valued Zhuang Zi's philosophy very much. At the same time she began her doctoral studies with the thesis "The Dao of Conducting" at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna, where she received her doctorate on June 4, 2020 with top marks and distinction. The appraisal emphasized that Chang's work “breaks new ground in several respects. It brings two great cultures into dialogue with one another on a terrain in a way that was previously not thought possible ”and is“ thus a pioneering work in which the philosophical knowledge of Daoism is linked with the challenges of conducting in the 21st century. ”

reception

Pei-Yu Chang (2014)

“A conductor is unusual and it is worth seeing when Pei-Yu Chang conducts. She is a really powerful conductor who knows her role exactly and she convinces with warmth, expression and musicality. "

- La Tribune / Le Progres, December 21, 1997

“The concert evening gained its specific quality from the fine threads that weave between the Pulcinella suite on the one hand and Mendelssohn's fourth on the other. In both compositions, the Chinese guest conductor Pei-Yu Chang highlighted relatives and discovered secret correspondence. "

- Thomas Röllig : Interpretations with a kick and charm, Göttinger Tageblatt , April 19, 2004

“The orchestra of Toscana performed under Pei-Yu Chang with the greatest concentration, enthusiasm and expressiveness. Under their leadership, Beethoven's Third Piano Concerto became the highlight of the concert. Temperament, lyrical expressiveness and humor. The whole wealth of Beethoven's music was illuminated by the conductor Pei-Yu Chang. "

- Marcello de Angelis : Donne protagoniste con l'Orchestra della Toscana, Il Giornale della Toscana, December 3, 2001

"Pei-Yu Chang conducts energetically and precisely, the well-humored radio orchestra follows her, never crossing the line of good taste because Chang ensures the musical flow."

- Süddeutsche Zeitung , October 5, 1998

“The conductor presented a powerful individual style. Her movements were effective and clear, at the same time they remained gentle and calm. You cannot avoid feeling the deep and harmonious expression of the music. The idea was heavenly, as if it had magic in it. "
