Per-Ola Ljung (born November 7, 1967 ) is a Swedish former football player who now works as a coach . The defender won the national championship title and the national cup once with Helsingborgs IF as both player and coach.

Career

Ljung comes from the youth of Hästveda IF , from there he moved to IFK Hässleholm . In early 1988 he left the then second division and joined the Helsingborgs IF, which was competing in the third-highest division . In his second year with the new club, he rose with the team around the former national goalkeeper Jan Möller , Peter Esberg and Urban Stoltz to the second division, where they missed the march into the Allsvenskan with one point behind the Gothenburg club BK Häcken . Also in the following season the decision was tight, in the last round of the promotion games a Gothenburg club prevailed again with Västra Frölunda IF , the decision was made after the return leg due to the away goals rule .

At the end of the 1992 season Ljung rose with Helsingborgs IF in the Allsvenskan, the team studded with young talents such as Henrik Larsson - with 16 goals this season one of the guarantors of relegation -, Jesper Ljung and Ola Nilsson sat down in the league. He had the second highest value after goalkeeper Sven Andersson with 25 league appearances . In the 1995 season , coach Reine Almqvist led the club into the top group, with 18 league games Ljung contributed to the runner-up behind serial champions IFK Göteborg . In the following season he had to take a break for long stretches of the season due to an injury, he was then back on the full-back position . Even under Almqvist's successor Åge Hareide , he was one of the regular players and won the national cup in 1998 . Meanwhile, he jumped the 500-game limit for Helsingborgs IF. In the winter break of 1997/1998 he was a test player on a contract-free basis at the English club Watford FC and during this time he also played in the Associate Members' Cup against Fulham (final score 0: 1). In the summer break of the 1999 season , after nine season appearances , he left the club, which was national champion at the end of the season, and hired the second division Landskrona BoIS . With the club he qualified for the single-track Superettan . At the end of the second division season in 2001 he rose with the team around Matthias Eklund , Alexander Farnerud , Henrik Nilsson and Daniel Nannskog to the Allsvenskan, after another season in the Swedish elite series, he ended his active career.

After the end of his career, Ljung initially worked as a coach at the lower-class amateur clubs Torns IF and Helsingborgs Södra BIS , before returning to Helsingborgs IF in 2007 as a youth coach. Later he rose to the coaching assistant of the first division team and officially acted as head coach from 2010, since the newly signed Conny Karlsson did not have a sufficient coaching license . In the 2011 season , the team led the club to the most successful season in the club's history to date, when the club won the championship as well as the cup and Supercup. In December Ljung completed his coaching education and received the UEFA Pro license. In the summer of 2012, the club separated from him. A few days later, he was signed by the league competitor Örebro SK, who had not yet won a win and was in danger of relegation as the bottom of the table, as the successor of the dismissed Sixten Boström . Although the team won five games under his leadership, it was not enough to stay in the league. In the second division he played with the team for direct re-promotion, as second in the table behind Falkenbergs FF , he immediately returned to the top division.

In June 2013 Ljung resigned from his position at Örebro SK and was replaced by Alexander Axén . He then hired the Gothenburg second division club GAIS . He led the multiple champions, who were in danger of relegation, in eleventh place in the table with three points ahead of Östers IF to keep them up. Having started the 2015 season with great ambitions , the team stayed in the lower half of the table. After a 0: 4 away defeat at second Östersunds FK , he was dismissed after the 27th matchday two points from the relay places.

At the end of May 2016, Ljung returned to Helsingborgs IF and took on a role in player development at the youth academy. Six months later, he succeeded Henrik Larsson in November of that year as the head coach of the competition team, while his former HIF teammate Christoffer Andersson acted as assistant. With the first division relegated to players like Andreas Landgren , Adam Eriksson , Amethyst Bradley Ralani and Peter Larsson , he took seventh place in the table in the second division season 2017 , which was followed by the second division championship in the following season . Driven by strikers Andri Rúnar Bjarnason (16 goals this season) and Max Svensson (9 goals this season), the team distanced Falkenbergs FF and AFC Eskilstuna . Before the start of the Allsvenskan season in 2019 , the club extended his contract until the end of 2021. After the team had only successfully completed two games of the season in the first twelve games under his leadership, the club released him prematurely in June 2019.
