Philipp zu Hohenlohe-Langenburg

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Philipp Gottfried Alexander Prince of Hohenlohe-Langenburg (born January 20, 1970 in Crailsheim ) is a German entrepreneur and has been the head of Hohenlohe-Langenburg since 2004 . As such, he has since been known in public as Prince zu Hohenlohe-Langenburg .

Surname

According to his own information, the name Philipp Gottfried Alexander Prinz zu Hohenlohe-Langenburg is entered in Philipp's identity card. But he calls himself a prince because he runs a princely business and is in the tradition of earlier family businesses.

family

Philipp Prinz zu Hohenlohe-Langenburg was born as the first son of Kraft zu Hohenlohe-Langenburg and his wife Charlotte Alexandra Princess von Croÿ . His father was the eldest son of Gottfried zu Hohenlohe-Langenburg and his wife Princess Margarita of Greece , the eldest sister of Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh , the husband of Queen Elizabeth II. His father was thus a cousin of the British heir to the throne Prince Charles as well by Anne Mountbatten-Windsor, the British Princess Royal and their siblings Andrew and Edward. Anne is one of Philip's godmothers. Philipp is next to Maximilian Andreas von Baden the closest relative of the British royal family in Germany and was the only German invited to the wedding of William and Kate in the British royal family in 2011 . As a descendant of Queen Victoria , Prince zu Hohenlohe-Langenburg was ranked 192 in the British line of succession in 2001; before the birth of George of Cambridge he was ranked 162nd, in 2013 he was ranked 189 in the list of around 5000 people living which his father still took 74th place in 1961. Mutual visits by the Windsor and Hohenlohe-Langenburg families are frequent. Elisabeth II was once at Langenburg Castle on her first state visit to the Federal Republic of Germany, her husband Prince Philip was there several times with his older sister and her children and grandchildren, and Prince Charles also visited his relatives several times. In return, Elizabeth II invites Philip's family to the horse race from Ascot to Windsor in May and to the hunt at Sandringham House in Norfolk in winter .

Philipp married the investment banker Saskia Li Binder (born January 15, 1973 in Munich ), daughter of the former director of the Deutsche Bank branch in Munich, Hans Peter Binder, on September 6, 2003 in Langenburg and church on September 13, 2003 in Dießen at the Ammersee . The couple have two sons and a daughter.

life and work

He did an apprenticeship as a banker and then studied business administration before he took over the Langenburg property, which also includes around 2,700 hectares of forest around Langenburg and Weikersheim, at the age of 34 after the death of his father. This property, which is managed by the “Fürstliche Forstverwaltung Hohenlohe-Langenburg” and is the main source of income for the house, makes Philipp one of the largest forest owners in Germany. He also succeeded his father as first chairman of the German Automobile Museum, which he founded with Richard von Frankenberg and opened in 1970 at Langenburg Castle. It is the oldest independent car museum in Germany.

Philipp is a proponent of wind power, and he promotes its expansion. In April 2012, together with the lawyer and owner of Götzenburg Jagsthausen Götz Freiherr von Berlichingen (* 1967), Roman Herzog's step son, he signed a contract with EnBW to develop one of the largest closed wind power development portfolios in Baden-Württemberg. In the Brüchlinger Wald, which belongs to the Prince and which is part of the Langenburg district, the energy company plans to build 18, later 24 wind turbines with a height of around 200 meters (up to the rotor tip) on an area of around 540 hectares. This commitment of the prince is not without controversy and causes great protests in the population. Philipp, on the other hand, sees wind power as an opportunity to end the one-sided dependence on forestry, which is extremely vulnerable due to natural influences. According to his own statements, he wants to create another source of income in order to be able to counter-finance the renovation and maintenance costs for Langenburg Castle. This always requires considerable expenditure. The renovation of the castle bridge alone cost around 250,000 euros in 2014. Philipp financed part of the sum by auctioning 100 weapons from the possession of the Langenburg dynasty in a London auction house. According to his own statements, the Prince of Hohenlohen-Langenburg incurs 100,000 to 200,000 euros annually for renovation costs at the culturally and historically valuable Langenburg Castle. Langenburg Castle has 5 hectares of walls, 4 hectares of roofs and over 1 km of heating pipes. Philipp zu Hohenlohe tries through events such as B. the Princely Garden Days , weddings and events as well as the forest climbing park Hohenlohe on the Schlossberg to develop new sources of income to finance the maintenance of his castle. Together with the castle café, in addition to the renovation of the castle bridge, as much as 380,000 euros had to be spent in 2014.

Together with his wife, Philipp zu Hohenlohe created the motto “Langenburg Castle - Hohenlohe Experience” in order to promote the revitalization of Langenburg Castle and its museums. In 2004 he initiated the annual Princely Garden Days at Langenburg Castle, which are considered the largest private garden fair in Baden-Württemberg with more than 25,000 visitors annually. In 2011 Philipp was the managing director of the State Palaces and Gardens of Baden-Württemberg , Michael Hörrmann, initiator of the association “Castles and Gardens of Baden-Wuerttemberg” (SBGBW), to which municipal sponsors such as the “State Palaces and Gardens of Baden-Wuerttemberg” joined “As well as private lords and castle owners who together bring almost 100 monuments together. Philip and Hörrmann, you are the chairmen of the association residing in Schloss Bruchsal. In 2016, Philipp founded the Hohenlohe garden network, which legally still belongs to the association “Schlösser Burgen Gärten Baden-Württemberg”. On May 9, 2016, the members presented the network, to which the Association of Palaces, Castles, Gardens Baden-Württemberg, the Touristikgemeinschaft Hohenlohe, Schwäbisch Hall Tourism in Schwäbisch Hall, and the State Palaces and Gardens of Baden-Württemberg belong, at the State Horticultural Show Öhringen presented to the public.

On June 24, 2007 he was appointed Knight of Honor of the Order of St. John .

Philipp zu Hohenlohe-Langenburg is a member of the Langenburg municipal council . In 2010 the 169th meeting of the Bremen Tobacco Collegium took place at Langenburg Castle, to which Federal President Roman Herzog also attended .

As chairman of the Hohenlohe Society , Hohenlohe-Langenburg is actively committed to promoting sustainable agriculture and traditional, high-quality agricultural products in the Hohenlohe region and throughout Germany. For several years he has been working closely with his cousin's Prince Charles' International Sustainability Unit in this regard .

Philipp zu Hohenlohe-Langenburg is the initiator and, together with Joschka Fischer & Company, founded in 2009 by the former German Foreign Minister Joschka Fischer , sponsor of the Langenburg Forum for Sustainability . Their work is supported by Prince Charles' International Sustainability Unit . In 2011, 2013 and also in 2015, a two-day forum organized by the Langenburg Forum for Sustainability took place at Langenburg Castle; the 2011 forum was about sustainable agriculture in an international comparison, that of 2013 had sustainable regional agricultural and food systems, and that of 2015 had sustainable Mobility and logistics on the topic, which was discussed by around 100 decision-makers from politics, civil society and business. Former US Secretary of State Madeleine Albright gave a keynote speech in 2015 at Langenburg Castle . Other guests were Klaus Töpfer , ex-environment minister, BMW board member Peter Schwarzenbauer and Günther Oettinger , EU commissioner for digital economy, ex-federal foreign minister Joschka Fischer as well as prime minister Winfried Kretschmann and justice minister Heiko Maas . Prince Charles, who was still there in person in 2013, was connected via video. In 2017, the former Secretary General of the United Nations, Kofi Annan , attended the forum.
