The Sydney Entertainment Center (SEC) , later also known as the Qantas Credit Union Arena, was a multi-purpose arena in the Australian metropolis of Sydney , New South Wales . It was used for sporting events as well as concerts . The multifunctional arena was opened from 1979 to 1983. It was closed in December 2015 and demolition began in early 2016. The arena was home to the basketball teams of the Sydney Kings and the Sydney Uni Flames . Well-known artists and bands such as David Bowie , Dire Straits , Elton John , Eric Clapton , Genesis and Prince performed in front of sold-out audiences in the arena, which was one of the largest in Sydney with a capacity of 13,500 spectators (later 10,517) .
