Rasgrad (also Razgrad , Bulgarian Разград [ razˈɡrat ] ) is a city in northeast Bulgaria . It is the center of the oblast and municipality of the same name . The city is near Ruse .
geography
Razgrad is located in the valley of the Beli Lom River , in the central part of north-eastern Bulgaria. This region is called Ludogorie and belongs to the Danube Plain, which is characterized by a typical flat or slightly hilly appearance. The mean height of the municipality of Razgrad is 250 to 270 m above sea level.
In the course of many centuries, many trade routes connecting Central Europe with the Black Sea region and Asia have crossed in the Razgrad region.
The municipality of Razgrad is centrally located to the other municipalities of the Razgrad Oblast:

Razgrad Oblast borders the Russian, Shumen and Targovishte Oblasts.
history
Abrittus was an ancient Roman settlement from the 2nd to 4th centuries . The remains of the settlement are in the Chisarlaka area, about three kilometers from present-day Razgrad.
In June 251 the Romans were defeated at the Battle of Abrittus . Emperor Decius fell . He was the first Roman emperor to be killed in a battle with the barbarians .
The present town probably developed from the Bulgarian settlement called "Chrasgrad" from the 13th century , from which the present name of the town can be derived. After the Ottoman conquest in the 14th century , they called the city Chesargrad, Chesesgrad or Chrasgrad, while the Bulgarians called it Rasgrad.
Razgrad is known for hajdús -Trupp of Wojwoden Tanjo Stoyanov. The city was conquered on January 16, 1878 during the Russo-Ottoman War (1877-1878) by Russian troops of the 13th Army Corps, led by Prince Alexander Dondukow-Korsakow . In addition to numerous Russian soldiers, 68 Bulgarian volunteers died in the battle.
The city has given its name to Razgrad Peak , a mountain on Greenwich Island in Antarctica , since 2005 .
population
In 1998 the Bulgarians made up the majority of the population in the city with 69%, some of them are Bulgarian Muslims or Pomaks . Next to her there is a Turkish minority, which with its 27% is one of the largest in the country (national average 9%, but 47% in Razgrad Oblast) and a minority of the Sinti and Roma (approx. 2%). In the entire oblast, Bulgarian and Turkish Muslims together made up a population majority of 54% in 2001 compared to Christians (43%), atheists and others.
Culture and sport
The Anton Straschimirow Theater was founded in the city in 1947 . Well known is the Kapanski Ensemble , a dance and music ensemble that is named after an ethnic Bulgarian group, the Kapanzer from the Ludogorie area .

- Mausoleum and ossuary of fallen Russian soldiers (Russo-Ottoman War, 1877–1878). The remains were reburied here in 1978. The mausoleum was opened in 1880. The mausoleum was built according to plans by the architect Friedrich Grünanger , who was an architect in Razgrad at the time.

The local football club Ludogorez Razgrad was Bulgarian football champion from 2012 to 2019 and qualified for the group stage of the UEFA Champions League in 2014/15 and 2016/17 .
