The Oberwart Gunners, Gunners for short , are a Burgenland basketball club from Oberwart . The club was founded in 1957 as Union Basketball Club Oberwart by Johann Hadek. Alfred Wertner (deceased October 2010) is considered the father of the new Gunners, who made it to the Austrian basketball league . From 1992 to 1995 the team played in the 2nd Bundesliga; continuously in the Austrian basketball league since 1995 .
The club celebrated its greatest successes with the championship titles in 2011 and 2016. In 1997, 1998, 2005, 2007, 2008, 2013 and 2017, the runner-up title was achieved. In 1995, 1999, 2005 and 2016 the Gunners won the cup . For 2016 this means the first double in the club's history. In the last 2016/17 season, the Gunners won 27 of 32 games (win rate 84%).

The team lost in the 1/16 finals 66:92 and 64:92 respectively against the Spanish top team Bruguer Badalona. Oberwart Gunners was the first Austrian basketball club to reach the 1/16 finals in a European cup competition.
