Resolution 660 of the UN Security Council of August 2, 1990 was passed in response to the invasion of Iraqi troops in the neighboring country of Kuwait .

Resolution text

“The Security Council,

deeply concerned about the invasion of Kuwait by the armed forces of Iraq on August 2, 1990,

declaring that with the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait there has been a breach of world peace and security,

acting under Articles 39 and 40 of the United Charter Nations ,

  1. condemns the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait;
  2. Demands that Iraq immediately and unconditionally withdraw all of its forces to the positions they were in on August 1, 1990;
  3. calls on Iraq and Kuwait to immediately enter into detailed negotiations to resolve their differences, and supports all efforts in this regard, particularly those of the League of Arab States;
  4. Resolves, if necessary, to meet again to consider further measures to ensure compliance with this resolution.

In the absence of Yemen , this resolution was passed unanimously. "
