The Resolution 652 of the UN Security Council is a resolution that the United Nations Security Council at its 2918th meeting on 17th April 1990 unanimously decided. After examining the application of the Republic of Namibia for membership in the United Nations, the Council recommended that the General Assembly accept Namibia.
Namibia became the 160th member of the United Nations on April 23, 1990, after being a German colony and ruled by South Africa for 75 years under its mandate as South West Africa .
United States Ambassador Thomas R. Pickering said as the resolution was passed:
"The birth of Namibia was long and difficult, but it now seems that the star under which she is born shines brightly."
- Thomas R. Pickering
