The ABe 8/12 are three-part electric multiple units , of which the Rhaetian Railway (RhB) has ordered a total of 15 units from Stadler Rail . The multiple units have been used according to schedule by the RhB since 2010. The first vehicle was delivered to Landquart on October 13, 2009 and then subjected to various tests. Similar to other Stadler productions Flirt , Spatz or Star, the trains are referred to as Allegra , which corresponds to a Rhaeto-Romanic greeting .

Since the Bernina Railway has its peak traffic in summer and the other two routes in winter, the multiple units for all three routes are designed to be capable of two systems for 11 kV alternating voltage with a frequency of 16.7 Hz and 1 kV direct voltage. This allowed the construction of a large, uniform series and results in the greatest possible flexibility in operation.

The multiple units have been the main means of traction on the Bernina Railway since 2011 and haul regional trains, the Bernina Express , which consists only of panorama cars , and freight trains. Most of the passenger trains on the Arosa Railway and to Davos are covered with Allegras. After Arosa, they are used alone when there is less traffic. The Landquart – Davos trains continue to Filisur after a stop of just over half an hour.

The requirement profile results in the need to be able to transport a high trailer load. This also explains the comparatively high continuous output of 2.3 MW for a railcar. The RhB's most powerful locomotive design, the Ge 4/4 III, has a continuous output of 2.4 MW. The starting tractive effort of an Allegra unit is even 30% higher than that of a Ge 4/4 III due to the distribution of the drive power over eight axles with 280 kN. This is necessary for the transport of heavy trains on the ramps of the Bernina and Arosa Railway. After commissioning, the maximum drawbar load on the Bernina line for these multiple units was increased from 140 to 160 tons. Each multiple unit cost around 10 million francs.

construction

Each of the three cars in a unit runs on two two-axle bogies. This means that each trolley can be rolled individually. The cars are closely coupled to each other, they can only be separated in the workshop. The transitions between the cars are protected by bellows and can be used by travelers. However, there are no transition options to the wagon train. The non-powered intermediate car has a low entry, which ensures barrier-free access to public transport for people with reduced mobility. There is a first-class compartment with 12 seats behind each of the two driver's cabs. The partition wall to the driver's cab is glazed and offers passengers a view over the shoulder of the locomotive driver who is sitting in the middle of the driver's cab on the route.

One unit offers a total of 24 seats in the first and 76 seats in the second class, plus 14 folding seats and space for two wheelchairs. The handicapped accessible toilet is located in the middle car. This has a low-floor area, the entrances there are equipped with sliding steps that are extended when the doors are opened. The passenger compartments and driver's cabs are air-conditioned.

A single-arm pantograph with three contact strips for direct current sits on each end car, and one for alternating current on the middle car. In the event of a malfunction and when shunting, each pantograph can be used with both voltages. All three pantographs are connected to one another via a high-voltage roof line; the vehicle automatically detects the power system when the engine driver commands the “main switch on”.

The trains are capable of shuttle trains, so they can be controlled from a control car. This is currently (2020) being used in particular between Landquart, Davos and Filisur, where the multiple units with the Bt 52801 to 52808 built in 2018 are used. With the existing RhB locomotives, however, they cannot be controlled in multiple ways .

Speed ​​record on meter gauge

On the occasion of the farewell drive for the departing director on December 20, 2010, the 3502 unit in the Vereina tunnel reached a speed of 145 km / h. Previously, 139 km / h had been reached during the commissioning runs on December 5, 2009. The previous record for meter gauge vehicles of 134 km / h was only set in June 2009 at Regionalverkehr Bern – Solothurn (RBS) with a RABe 4/12 «NExT», also a multiple unit built by Stadler. So far, the RhB has registered a maximum of 110 km / h.

The multiple units are intended for the following main areas of use (although they can be used on the entire RhB network if required).

For the Chur agglomeration traffic ( Chur - Thusis or Schiers - Landquart - Chur - Rhäzüns ) a related type followed in 2011: The ABe 4/16 , which are only designed for the AC voltage of the main network.

Names

On May 1, 2010 the first four multiple units were christened. The names of famous people in Graubünden are used to name the new multiple units.
