history

By decree of Napoleon on 14 November 1808, the old court and administrative structure of the country has been suspended and in France since the Revolution valid administrative divisions introduced. The Grand Duchy of Berg was divided into four départements with twelve arrondissements (districts) and 78 cantons . Munizipalitäten or Mairien (mayor's offices) were later formed on the lowest administrative level .

It consisted of the old Duchy of Berg , without Windeck and part of the Blankenberg office , of the previously Nassau and originally Electoral Cologne offices of Vilich , Wolkenburg ( Königswinter ) and Deutz , of the dominions of Broich , Styrum and Hardenberg as well as Elten , Essen and Werden and from the part of the Duchy of Cleve on the right bank of the Rhine , excluding Wesel (to France) and the districts of Huissen , Sevenaer and Malburgen (to Holland).

From that point on, the Rhine department comprised the capital Düsseldorf with the four arrondissements

After an announcement by the Minister of the Interior on January 28, 1811, the former Vest Recklinghausen was merged with the Grand Duchy of Berg and assigned to the Arrondissement of Essen. The occupation took place on February 2, 1811, the area was divided into the cantons of Recklinghausen and Dorsten .
