biography

Private

Leitinger skied for the first time as a two-year-old on the valley meadow in his home town of Sankt Martin bei Lofer in Salzburg's Saalach Valley , and he contested his first race when he was three. As a six year old he came to the ski club in his hometown. After primary school in St. Martin and secondary school in Zell am See , he attended the ski trade school in Schladming from 2005 . His father Willi Leitinger is the managing director of Bergbahnen Lofer.

youth

After reaching the age limit, he took part in FIS races for the first time in the 2006/2007 season. He achieved his first successes at the Austrian Championships in 2008 in Haus im Ennstal , when he took second place in the combined class in the general class and third place in the Super-G in his youth I age group.

In addition to alpine skiing, Leitinger was initially very successful on shorter skis in short carving and firn gliding. In short carving, the then only 15-year-old was not only Austrian champion in 2007, but also European champion in the eventing competition in Steinach am Brenner . After two further Austrian championship titles in the slalom in 2008 and in the eventing competition in 2009, he won all three disciplines (slalom, eventing, combination) at the Austrian short carving championships in 2010. He was also three-time Austrian youth champion in 2009 and 2010. In 2008 he achieved his first major success in firngliding with the state champion title in giant slalom. In 2011 he won all three competitions (slalom, giant slalom and combination) in the general class and in the youth class II at the Austrian championships in Schruns .

First successes

Roland Leitinger in the slalom of the Austrian Alpine Ski Championships 2008

In alpine skiing, the slalom and especially the giant slalom Leitinger became the strongest discipline. After his first victory in an FIS race, Leitinger, who had previously been a member of the Salzburg national team for several years, was accepted into the B-team of the Austrian Ski Association in 2010 . In addition to the FIS races, he has since competed in the European Cup and achieved three top 10 placements in his first 2010/11 season - all in giant slalom. He was also used at the Junior World Championships 2011 in Crans-Montana , where he was eliminated or disqualified in slalom and Super-G, but reached fourth place in giant slalom. After this performance, Leitinger was allowed to compete in the giant slalom in Hinterstoder for the first time in the World Cup on February 6, 2011 . As 38th of the first round he missed the qualification for the final run of the best 30. Even at his second World Cup start in the winter of 2010/11 in the giant slalom in Kranjska Gora he did not qualify for the second round. At national level, he was Austrian youth champion in giant slalom in 2011 and third at the state championships in this discipline.

The 2011/2012 season came to an early end for Leitinger after a fracture of the ankle bone that he suffered in the first European Cup race of the winter in Trysil on December 5th . Leitinger also had to end the following season early due to injury after suffering a cruciate ligament rupture in his left knee while training for the World Cup giant slalom in Alta Badia .

In the 2013/14 season Roland was able to fight back after the injuries and started the World Cup opener in Sölden , where he was eliminated, for the third time in the World Cup. In the following 2014/15 season he competed in Sölden for the fourth time and again failed to make it into the second round as 33rd. On November 21, 2014 Leitinger reached the European Cup podium for the first time with third place in the giant slalom in Levi . In his sixth appearance in the World Cup, he won World Cup points for the first time in Åre with 21st place in the giant slalom. On January 26, 2015, he made his second European Cup podium at the giant slalom in Lélex , with which he secured victory in the discipline classification.

Establishment among the world's best

While Leitinger has not yet made his breakthrough in slalom and he continues to compete in the European Cup there - the best result so far was a seventh place in Jaun - he managed to establish himself permanently in the Alpine Ski World Cup in his favorite giant slalom discipline . He achieved his best World Cup result so far on October 25, 2015 in the giant slalom in Sölden, where he shared 6th place with Henrik Kristoffersen and Felix Neureuther with the best time in the second round . At the World Cup Giant Slalom in Beaver Creek on December 6, 2015, he reached 10th place (also with the fastest time in the 2nd round). In the rest of the season he was able to score four more times and finished the 2015/16 season in 24th place in the RTL discipline ranking.

While preparing for the 2016/17 season , Leitinger struggled with serious back problems and had to take a two-month break. Until the Alpine World Ski Championships 2017 in St. Moritz , he did not achieve a top ten placement, but he was able to qualify for the World Championships with an 11th place in Val-d'Isère and a 15th place in the giant slalom in Alta Badia . There he had the big surprise and the best result of his career so far at the World Cup giant slalom on February 17, 2017 by winning the silver medal behind his teammate Marcel Hirscher .

On January 11, 2018, he tore his anterior cruciate ligament while training on the Reiteralm and thus missed the rest of the Olympic season. The comeback season 2018/19 was less successful with two 23rd places (Alta Badia and Val d'Isere) in the giant slalom and a 28th place in the parallel RTL in Alta Badia. Nevertheless, he qualified for the Alpine World Ski Championships 2019 in Åre , where he was eliminated in the second round. At the end he won the Italian championship in Cortina d'Ampezzo as well as his first Austrian state championship ex-aquo with Johannes Strolz , both in the giant slalom.

The World Cup season 2019/20 started Leitinger due to poor season 2018/19 again with a start number beyond 30. After he had driven each in the three first giant slalom in the points, he achieved on 23 December 2019 3rd place in the parallel giant slalom from Alta Badia first place on the podium. At RTL am Chuenisbärgli in Adelboden , he managed to jump from 27th to 6th place with the fastest time in the second round, which resulted in his best career result in a special giant slalom. Roland finished the season in 17th place in the RTL discipline ranking and 5th in the parallel ranking.
