Life

Rolf Heinemann grew up in Schönebeck (Elbe) , where he attended the eight-grade elementary school there from 1943 to 1951. From 1951 to 1953 he completed an apprenticeship as a machine fitter at the VEB Sprengstoffwerk Schönebeck / Elbe. In this profession he worked from 1953 to 1954 at VEB Geologische Bohrungen Gommern. He obtained his Abitur from 1954 to 1957 at the ABF Halle . Rolf Heinemann then studied mechanical engineering technology at the TU Dresden from 1957 to 1963 .

In 1963 he married Ulrike Heinemann (née Schneider), a successful orienteer (GDR champion in OL 1964 and 1968) and settled in Freital . His two sons Ulf (* 1967) and Björn (* 1973) work today as managing directors at Robotron Database Software GmbH, which he founded in 1990.

Rolf Heinemann is active in mountaineering and skiing . In Saxon Switzerland climbing region he was from 1955 through Vorstiege with high difficulty known (eg. As Gondakante , Devil's Tower , Wolf tip). As a result, he was appointed to the selection team of the Dresdner Wanderer- und Bergsteigerverein eV (DWBV, later DWBO ) and drove under the direction of Harry Dürichen together with Karl Däweritz from July 11 to August 3, 1959 in the northern Albanian Alps . There they made some first ascents .

With the IX. GDR championships in tourist cross-country skiing (today: ski orienteering ) in Oberschönau / Thür. Rolf Heinemann and Dieter Kaßbaum became GDR champions on February 25, 1961 .

In the early 1960s, he was able to win many athletic competitions, especially cross-country races , against strong competition. The running strengths were shown by personal bests such as the 3000 meter run with a running time of 9:08 minutes.

In 1961, on the initiative of Rolf Heinemann, the orienteering race began in the SG Dynamo Dresden in the tourism section. He led this group as a section leader and trainer. It quickly developed into one of the best known and most successful in the GDR. The 39 championship titles that were won between 1961 and 1983 testify to this, including the multiple individual titles of his wife Ulrike Heinemann, Hans-Dieter Baumgart and Rita Winkler . As an orienteer, Rolf Heinemann himself won several medals at the GDR orienteering championship .

In 1962, Rolf Heinemann was able to qualify for participation in the 1st European OL championships in Norway. However, participation was ultimately not possible for the GDR athletes due to Norway's membership in NATO . The then travel agency in West Berlin did not issue the GDR team with an entry visa . In 1964 there was nothing to prevent a GDR team from participating in Switzerland. Rolf Heinemann finished 22nd at the 2nd European Orienteering Championships in Le Brassus (Switzerland) on September 26, 1964, making him the best runner behind the Scandinavians and the Swiss.

With Hans-Dieter Baumgart, Rolf and Ulrike Heinemann three members of SG Dynamo Dresden were able to qualify for the orienteering world championship 1968 in Linköping , Sweden.

Robotron combine

From 1963 he worked as a technologist at VEB Tabak- und Industriemaschinen Dresden (later NAGEMA ). He was responsible for the mechanical process for recording the checklist and work process data on the basis of punched card technology. In 1965 he was recruited because of this activity for the Institute for Data Processing Dresden, a predecessor of the Robotron combine . Starting in 1969, the training in the IBM technology in the evaluation of the parts list processor BOMP took place here . On this basis, together with Dr. Johann Adam developed the BASTEI system (bank storage of technical information) for the Robotron 300 for mechanical engineering. In 1969 the Institute for Data Processing was taken over into the newly founded Robotron combine. Here he became head of software development in the area of production control with a focus on parts list management.

In 1973 Rolf Heinemann earned a doctorate by the conclusion of an unscheduled postgraduate in the field of development of database software for companies in the manufacturing industry.

From 1974 to 1990, he served as Head of the Department for the development of database software in the Center for Research and Technology and the project Robotron Dresden (RPD), the software house of combine Robotron. From 1974 he relies on the hierarchical data model with the DBSR (Robotron database system). The computer technology available at the time did not allow a relational approach for various reasons. Parallel to the DBSR, from 1980 onwards Heinemann relied on the development of the relational database system INTERBAS , based on the research report " System R " from IBM . In 1980, several departments merged to create the "Databases" division under the direction of Rolf Heinemann. With the development of the first personal computer by the Robotron combine in 1983, the decision was made to adapt the dBASE II system from Ashton-Tate to the REDABAS system .

1985 DEC proposed the introduction of the database system Rdb . Rolf Heinemann stood up for Oracle because he wanted a neutral system that was not dependent on the operating system. The responsible ministry was convinced with benchmark tests and so Oracle 3.2 and later also Oracle 4 was adapted under the name ALLDBS . "ORACLE" is replaced by the word "ALLDBS" in the source code and the first German manual is written. The experience gained in this way later became an important cornerstone for the cooperation with the Oracle Corporation from 1990 onwards. In May 1990, Rolf Heinemann signed a first contract for the conversion of ALLDBS customers to officially licensed Oracle 5.1 customers.

In 1990, after the political change in the GDR, the combine was privatized or liquidated by the Treuhandanstalt into individual companies. The decision was quickly made to found his own company with his colleagues. During a visit to CeBIT in Hanover in March 1990, he tried to win cooperation partners. When he asked in great detail about the database version 5.17 at the Oracle booth, the Oracle employees were amazed and reported this to their boss. Franz Niedermaier, then managing director of Oracle in Germany, heard about the trade fair visit and got in touch with Heinemann in Dresden. This resulted in a friendly business partnership.

Rolf Heinemann founded Robotron Database Software GmbH (RDS) on August 23, 1990 with 7 other shareholders as a management buy-out spin-off from the RPD. Although the shareholders raised 52 percent of the share capital of 64,000 DM, 48 percent of the company was held by the trust. 26 former Robotron employees applied for the takeover and were taken over.

In September 1990, Oracle Deutschland GmbH signed a partner agreement with its East German partner and temporarily (May 26, 1993–2005) even took over a minority stake of 33 percent of the company's share capital, now DM 300,000. As early as 1991, the company's own shareholders bought back the shares in the trust.

In April 1997, Heinemann secured the rights to the "Robotron" brand at the German Patent and Trademark Office in Munich. In 2008 his company had grown to 177 employees. In January 2017, a total of 493 were working at Robotron Database Software GmbH and its subsidiaries. In the 2015/2016 financial year, the company had sales of EUR 36.8 million.

In 1995 the company moved to Dresden's Coschütz / Gittersee industrial park ; in 2001 a new building was built on Stuttgarter Straße and expanded in 2009. In 2014 around nine million euros were invested in a new office building including a new training and conference center.

The energy market in Germany was liberalized with the law on the revision of the energy industry law (EnWG) of April 24, 1998. The company succeeded in establishing an energy data management system (EDM) with the name "robotron * ecount" on the market. Today it is used to manage the energy data at electricity suppliers such as EnBW , Vattenfall or RWE and is the market leader in this area for the major network operators in Germany. The company generated around 70 percent of its sales in the energy industry in recent years .

In June 2004, Rolf Heinemann transferred the operational business to his son Ulf.
