Life

McLarty received his bachelor's degree from Rhode Island College in 1969 and made his Broadway debut in 1972 alongside James Woods and Christopher Guest in a production by Michael Wellers Moonchildren . He made his big screen debut in Michael Winner's horror film Witches Sabbath in 1977.

He became famous with American television audiences in the mid-1980s as Sgt. Frank Belson in the crime series Spenser , which was broadcast between 1985 and 1988, alongside Robert Urich and Avery Brooks . In 1990 he got one of the leading roles in the series Cop Rock , invented by Steven Bochco ; However, this was discontinued after just a few episodes and subsequently counted as one of the worst TV series of all time by the TV Guide . At the turn of the millennium, McLarty played the recurring role of Judge William Wright in Law & Order . He also appeared in guest roles on numerous series, including Sex and the City , Amy For All Cases, and Person of Interest . McLarty has occasionally been seen in feature films; He had supporting roles in heartburn alongside Meryl Streep and Jack Nicholson and in Kevin Costner's film flop Postman . He made his last film appearance in 2014, alongside Bill Murray and Melissa McCarthy in St. Vincent .

In addition to his work as an actor, McLarty also worked as a radio play speaker and read numerous audio books by well-known authors such as Stephen King , David Baldacci and Elmore Leonard . He also wrote his own novels, for which he was initially unable to find a publisher. For The Incredible Journey of Smithy Ide , his third book, he managed to convince his audio book publisher to let him read it; The recording fell into the hands of Stephen King, who featured and praised the audio book in his 2003 Entertainment Weekly column. This created an enormous demand for McLarty's works and as a result these were published by Penguin Books . In addition, he sold the film rights to Warner Bros. Entertainment and also wrote a script, but it was never made into a film.

McLarty was married to actress Kate Skinner for the second time since 2004 , after his first wife succumbed to complications from cancer in 2002. The first marriage had three children.
