Royals & Kings ( English for, members of the royal family and the Kings') is a song of the German electro - duo Glass Bead Game , in cooperation with the originating also from Germany rapper Summer Cem . The piece is the first single from their fourth studio album Licht & Schatten .
Creation and artwork
The song was written jointly by Markus Gorecki, Daniel Grunenberg , Katharina Löwel ( Kitty Kat ), Carolin Niemczyk , Peter Stanowsky, Cem Toraman ( Summer Cem ) and Marcel Uhde ( Juh-Dee ). The single was mixed and produced by Pascal Reinhardt. The mastering took place under the direction of Lex Barkey. Royals & Kings was published under the music label Polydor , published in its various versions by B612 Publishing, Bodensee Songs, Budde Music Publishing and Koepenick Songs and distributed by Universal Music Publishing .
On the cover of the single - in addition to the artist name and song title - the upper bodies of the two Glasperlenspiel members can be seen, standing next to each other against a white background. On the left is Niemczyk, who is wearing a white blouse and whose gaze is directed forward towards the viewer. On the right is Grunenberg, wearing a white shirt and looking to the left. The cover picture is an excerpt from a previous recording and originally comes from a press photo taken by Arton Sefa.
Publication and promotion
The first publication of Royals and Kings took place as a single download on March 2, 2018. Three weeks later, an investment made by Calyre remix version was released as a single download on March 23, 2018. Both versions are on the "Deluxe Version" of the Glass Bead Game fourth studio album Light & Shadow find . In addition, a radio version (" Radio Edit ") of Royals & Kings appeared on the album , which is a few seconds shorter and in which Summer Cem is not involved.
In order to promote the song and himself, there were live appearances at ZDF-Fernsehgarten on Tour , in the ZDF-Morgenmagazin and in the ZDF-Fernsehgarten . In addition, the German music television broadcaster VIVA has been using the piece as an advertising and program separator since April 2018 . Thus, the piece can be heard at the beginning and end of various commercial breaks.

The lyrics to Royals & Kings are with the exception of the title and the words "Queen" ( English for 'Queen'), "Business" ( English for 'business') and "Million-Dollar-Smile" ( English for' Million-Dollar - Smile ') written in German. The piece was composed jointly by Markus Gorecki, Daniel Grunenberg , Katharina Löwel ( Kitty Kat ), Carolin Niemczyk , Peter Stanowsky, Cem Toraman ( Summer Cem ) and Marcel Uhde ( Juh-Dee ). With the exception of Uhde, all composers were also active as songwriters. Musically, the song moves in the realm of electronic pop music and rap . The tempo is 140 beats per minute . The song begins with the first verse, the main vocals of which are from Grunenberg. The verse is followed by the refrain, which is sung by Niemczyk. The same process is repeated with the second stanza. The second chorus is followed by the third verse, which Summer Cem raps using auto-tune . Then a third refrain concludes the suffering. During the solo or radio version without cem, the third stanza is omitted, instead the refrain is repeated after the second stanza. In terms of content, the song is a hymn to the essentials in life, a hymn that values the simple things in life. The most important thing in life is far from being luxury. “Royals & Kings” don't need pompous locks , fat limousines and glittering bling-bling, they prefer to celebrate the beauty of simple things. Because it is precisely these immaterial things that are often the most valuable - friendship, freedom, love, happiness and contentment. This is how Universal Music described the piece. In an interview with the evening newspaper , Carolin Niemczyk described Royals & Kings in the following words: “At Royals & Kings , the focus is on the idea that many people always have the feeling that they still have to own more. But if you focus on the essentials, it ultimately only depends on being happy, that you have people you love and that you can fulfill your dreams. " |
Music video
To Royals & Kings two music videos were released. First, on March 8, 2018, a poetry video premiered on YouTube . In this, the complete lyrics, as you know it from typical lyric videos, are displayed in the foreground. Various photographs, caricatures and visualizations can be seen in the background . The total length of the video is 3:35 minutes.
The official music video premiered around a month later (April 13, 2018) on YouTube. It was shot in a shabby ballroom where Glasperlenspiel had their first photo shoot in 2010 . The video can be divided into two sections, which can always be seen alternating. On the one hand, different couples - across genders - can be seen kissing in different places, at different times or on different occasions. On the other hand, it shows the two Glasperlenspiel members who mostly sing the song for themselves in the ballroom. At the end of the song, the two meet and kiss too. Summer Cem does not appear in the music video. The idea for a "kiss video" came from the fact that a kiss is the most honest situation you can get. The moment is very emotional and that is exactly what they want to say with the song. The total length of the video is 3:38 minutes. Directed by Gregor Erler . To date, both music videos have over 2.4 million views on YouTube (as of May 2018).

Reviews
The German-language online magazine laut.de described Royals & Kings as a "foreign shame feature ". Up to Summer Cem's rap part, the song sounds like an “uninteresting pop song” with a common “sing along hook ”. The Gladbacher got in towards the end and loaded the piece with an auto-tune overloaded “ trap ” part in which he used the simplest rhymes. The online magazine also described the pictures in the lyric video as being just as cheesy as the text.
Kevin Holtmann from the German e-zine Plattentests.de rated the album with only three out of ten points. In his review he comes to the conclusion that Royals & Kings have their positive moments, even if Grunenberg's voice always reminds us of Marteria in an "irritating way" . What is also noticeable negatively on the album are the many product placements that run through the pieces. You almost feel like you're trapped in a permanent commercial . The brands Rolls-Royce and Spotify appear in Royals & Kings .

Royals & Kings initially missed a chart entry when it was first released. In Germany, the single was initially placed in the single trend charts . Royals & Kings first entered the single trending charts on March 9, 2018. The single stayed there for a total of seven weeks before it made it into the official German single Top 100 on April 27, 2018 .
The single reached position 70 in the single charts in Germany and stayed in the charts for a total of five weeks. The piece was also able to place itself in the German download single charts , with the single reaching its highest chart rating at position 18. In addition, Royals & Kings was able to place itself in the German iTunes daily evaluations for several weeks , with Royals & Kings reaching its highest listing with position three on April 24, 2018. The Calyre remix was also able to place itself in the iTunes daily evaluations , the remix was placed in the charts for two days and reached its highest position at position 24 on April 18, 2018. In Austria and Switzerland, the single has so far missed the official single charts .
Glasperlenspiel reached the German single charts for the eighth time with Royals & Kings , as authors Grunenberg and Niemczyk hereby reach the charts for the ninth time. In his writing, Cem reached the German single charts for the 23rd time and as an interpreter for the 22nd time. For Uhde it is the 29th chart success in Germany in his writing and producing activities. Gorecki and Löwel reached the German single charts for the sixth time as authors and Reinhardt as author or producer. For Stanowsky Royals & Kings is the first chart success of his career.
