Light & Shadow is the fourth studio album of the German electro - duo Glass Bead Game .
Creation and artwork
With the exception of the song Feinde , all pieces on the regular album were written and composed by the two Glasperlenspiel members Daniel Grunenberg and Carolin Niemczyk - in collaboration with changing co-authors. Only the opening song Schatten & Licht was created without outside influence. In addition to the two Glasperlenspiel members, the Berlin singer-songwriter Peter Stanowsky provides most of the authors' participation. He co-wrote eight of the 14 songs. The two German songwriters Johannes Burger and Kilian Wilke wrote four pieces each. The producer Markus Gorecki, who comes from Gelsenkirchen-Erle , provides three author participations. Furthermore, the Berlin rapper Kitty Kat (Katharina Löwel) and the Munich rapper Ali As (Zulfiqar Ali Chaudhry) co-wrote more than one title. Burger, Löwel, Stanowsky and Wilke were already active as authors on the previous Glasperlenspiel albums. In addition to the composers and songwriters already listed, 29 others contributed to individual pieces.
The album was produced by changing producers. Most of the productions are the result of the collaboration between Glasperlenspiel member Grunenberg, the Munich musician Daniel Grossmann and the Berlin music producer Matthias Mania. The trio produced six pieces together. In addition to the two, only the Mainz producer Michael Geldreich and the Berlin-based producer Pascal Reinhardt have made several productions. Both were responsible for three productions each. In addition, Andreas Herbig, the producer trio Madizin (consisting of Patrick Benzner, Dave Roth and Serhat Sakin) and Patrick Salmy are involved in other productions. The tracks were mixed by the respective producers, only Grunenberg is not involved in the mixing. The mastering took place under the direction of Lex Barkey from Berlin.
On the cover of the album - in addition to artist names and song titles - the upper bodies of the two Glasperlenspiel members can be seen, standing next to each other against a white background. On the left is Niemczyk, wearing a white blouse . While her upper body is directed to the left, her gaze goes in the direction of the viewer. On the right is Grunenberg, who is wearing a white shirt. His gaze is also directed forward. Grunenberg's upper body is directed to the right, in the direction of Niemczyk. The cover picture is an excerpt from a previous recording and originally comes from a press photo taken by Arton Sefa.
Publication and promotion
The initial release of Light & Shadow took place on April 20, 2018. The regular album consists of 14 new studio recordings and is available on CD and download. At the same time, a “deluxe version” of the album was released. This includes a second CD with 13 remix and cover recordings. The album was released under the Polydor music label and distributed through Universal Music Publishing .
In order to promote the album and himself, there were live appearances with Royals & Kings on ZDF-Fernsehgarten on Tour and in the ZDF-Morgenmagazin . In addition, the German music television broadcaster VIVA has been using the piece as an advertising and program separator since April 2018 . Thus Royals & Kings can be heard at the beginning and end of various commercial breaks. With the title Schloss , a live appearance in the ZDF television garden followed . RTL Television accompanied a commercial with the song for the 2018 season of Die Bachelorette .
content
All of the lyrics on the regular album are mostly in German and, with one exception, come from the two Glasperlenspiel members Daniel Grunenberg and Carolin Niemczyk, who wrote the piece with changing co-authors. Anglicisms can be found in many texts . In Royals & Kings you can find the expressions: "Queen" ( English for 'Queen'), "Business" ( English for 'Business') and "Million Dollar Smile" ( English for 'Million Dollar Smile') '). The "Deluxe Version" features three English-language recordings (cover versions) for the first time. Musically, the songs are mostly in the field of electro-pop . The guest contributions with Ali As and Summer Cem can also be stylistically assigned to rap . The Lied Schloss also includes dancehall sounds.
In terms of content, Glasperlenspiel auf Licht & Schatten, like its predecessors, deal with the topics of friendship ( welcome back ), heartbreak ( castle ) and separation ( enemies ). The standard work should represent the trendy light side. The additional sound carrier - with its remixes - the "darker", "progressive" shadow side, which is supposed to spread a kind of "club atmosphere". In an interview with the Abendzeitung , Grunenberg explained the album title as follows: “Light and shadow describe the interplay between light and dark, failure and happy moments. Both are part of life. We wouldn't know what happiness means without knowing the moment of falling. As a symbol of this, our plate will also appear with two differently colored sides. The light one is the pop album as we know it, the dark one is the same album again - but in a danceable club remix. "
With one exception, all pieces are new compositions. With Royals and Kings ( Radio Edit ) is a solo version of the original, recorded the Glass Bead Game without Summer Cem. During the solo or radio version without cem, the third stanza is omitted, instead the refrain is repeated after the second stanza. The “Deluxe Version” includes a second sound carrier on which remix and cover versions can be found. With the exception of the titles Twice as Beautiful , Love is Safe and Favorite Song, remix versions have also been recorded for all album titles. The Essen rap duo 257ers and the Hamburg rapper Disarstar appear in the remixes of Willkommen zurück und Nights Without Photos . The title Never Forget is an English-language version of Never Forget , the original from the second Glasperlenspiel album Grenzenlos . The track Tonight (Fuju Remix) is a cover version of the original by the German pop rock band Reamonn from 2006. The track Exclusive is the duo's first official English-language recording. The photo was taken as early as 2015 and served as the soundtrack to the documentary Capital C .

Reviews
Kevin Holtmann from the German-language e-zine Plattentests.de only awarded three out of ten points. The bad thing about Glasperlenspiel is its "all-encompassing harmlessness". Their “ultra-modern” and commercially successful electro-pop could not be more streamlined, both in terms of the “sound aesthetics” and the texts that negotiate the sensitivities of “affluent people in their mid-twenties”. Seen in this way, everything is of course “done” very well, trimmed for salability and as seamless as possible. At Glasperlenspiel, music becomes a product: exchangeable, packaged and easily consumed. What the average Glasperlenspiel song misses in its entirety is a specific essence: DSDS juror Niemczyk and her partner Grunenberg enrich their “popular Bausparer-Pop” with electronic moments, and in between they even come to terms with the cloud rap phenomenon , which then goes far beyond involuntarily comical. What also quickly and negatively catches the eye are the many product placements that run through the pieces: Netflix , Spotify , Chanel and Game of Thrones are "dropped", you almost feel as if you were trapped in a long-term commercial . The "opener" Schatten & Licht works quite well as a beat-driven catchy tune and was highlighted as the only "highlight" by Holtmann. The first single Royals & Kings also had its positive moments, even if Grunenberg's voice always reminds of Marteria in an irritating way . After that it will be "as expected zappenduster". You are “the most penetrating pop at a lyrical elementary school level”, while Welcome Back hardly goes beyond “mere phrase-thrashing”: The duo somehow try to capture the feeling of the “now-time”, but fail in the word-finding process. As a result, Grunenberg and Niemczyk always have to fall back on "phenomena of the zeitgeist" in order to bring their "sub-complex messages" to life. It is constantly about life in the moment, about experiencing good or “cool” times or “being immune to bad vibes”. This is then accompanied by “Oh-Oh” listening to give the whole thing something like the necessary momentum. When the duo then sings in scars that it's okay not to be perfect, you have to smile a little.
Toni Hennig from the German online magazine laut.de only gave the album one of five stars. Licht & Schatten await musically with attractively produced electro-pop, which flirts with either hip-hop ( royals & kings ) and dancehall ( castle ). However, the word tension build-up seems to be a foreign word. Basically, you hear the same euphoric chorus, underlaid with a lot of hum and showmanship, felt more than a hundred times. As a listener, you don't need to expect surprises. On the other hand, compared to the level of content, the music can certainly be got over. Glasperlenspiel still alternates between the themes of friendship ( welcome back ), heartbreak ( castle ) and separation ( enemies ). The band wants to be as natural and genuine as possible. That is why it says in Royals & Kings : "I party the way we are, we are not royals or kings." All the money in the world does not seem to be worth anything to the duo. When Summer Cem adds a few unmotivated lines on Auto-Tune to make others feel ashamed at the end, Niemczyk and Grunenberg vie for street credibility . Just don't take away this lower-class attitude from them. In contrast, at the time of publication, Niemczyk was on the DSDS jury. That could be seen as a double standard. In addition, the two musicians paint an ideal image of a love affair that is more like a soap opera than real life. Furthermore, the two of them think each other is so great that Kanye West and Kim Kardashian seem almost down-to-earth. Love is Safe is a solemn mid-tempo ballad that shines with a little variety compared to the rest of the completely uniform pieces off the shelf. The duo present themselves in this time "so completely immune to bad vibes". In addition, “Oh-Oh-Oh” chords resound from the “German Pop Resterampe”. As a listener, you can now gradually despair at the latest. It's bad when two people love each other and constantly have to rub it under the nose of the whole world. Nonetheless, the duo finally knocked out the bottom with their calendar sheet wisdom in the style of Julia Engelmann . If, for today's Generation Y, depression disappears with a grapefruit for breakfast, “cure heartache with a chocolate milk shake” in nights without photos . In difficult life situations, Niemczyk gave the listener in Scars the advice: “Don't hide, show how beautiful you are.” Then add: “You think you are not beautiful, but I see you with different eyes. “For the fact that she and Daniel are almost always the center of attention on this record, the veracity of this claim remains more than doubtful. Nevertheless, apparently enough people would take this “Stuhlkreis Gesülze” at face value. Hermann Hesse would probably have turned around in the grave. Accordingly, Licht & Schatten turns out to be an album that conveys fake feelings in a penetrating way. Glasperlenspiel would by and large adapt to the lyrical level of Julia Engelmann on the work. In addition, some numbers on the disc in the format radio should "doodle" up, down, down. As a listener it is "unfortunately" difficult to escape the interchangeable music of this duo. laut.de titled Licht & Schatten as one of the 30 worst albums of 2018.

Licht & Schatten reached position five in the album charts in Germany and stayed in the top 10 for one week and in the charts for ten weeks. The album also placed third in the top 15 German-language albums in Germany. In Austria the album reached position 23 in two chart weeks and in Switzerland position 40 in one chart week.
For Glasperlenspiel Licht & Schatten is the fourth chart success in the German album charts as well as the third in Switzerland and the second in Austria. In Germany, this is the second top 10 success in the album charts after Grenzlos . It is the second album after the predecessor Tag X that could be placed in all DA-CH countries at the same time . In addition, no album by the duo has so far been able to rank higher in all three countries. In Germany, the duo replaces their second studio album Grenzlos , which reached position eight at the time. In Austria and Switzerland they also set new records in the album charts. There, their highest charting prices were previously at position 54 and 49, providing them with the third studio album each day X reached.
