Sæby is a port town in the Danish municipality of Frederikshavn , Nordjylland region , with 8,871 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2020). It is located on the Kattegat coast in the Vendsyssel region . Frederikshavn is 15 kilometers north, Aalborg 54 km southwest. Aalborg can be reached via the E 45 motorway ( Frederikshavnmotorvejen ).
Until December 31, 2006 Sæby was the main town of Sæby Municipality in what was then North Jutland Office .
history
The place was founded - probably by Vikings - at an estuary. The place name Sæby is derived from Søby (literally Seestadt); the river is called Sæby Å after the village .
From 1462, after the founding of the Mariested Monastery, until the Reformation , the place was called Mariested . At that time the Sæby Church was dedicated to the Virgin Mary ; it was attached to a Carmelite monastery , which was subordinate to the monastery Børglum . The manor Sæbygaard in the west of the village was owned by the bishop until the Reformation. The city coat of arms with the crescent moon Madonna reminds of the Catholic times, when the place received city rights in 1524 thanks to Bishop Stygge Krumpen . Sæby lost its position as the largest town in Vendsyssel in the 17th century as a result of the Second Northern War and the increasing silting up of the port.
When trade flourished again in the 1840s, neighboring Frederikshavn had already developed into the region's economic center. A railway connection was created there in 1899, which was replaced by a bus line in 1968.
Spa tourism reached Sæby at the end of the 19th century. Many writers and celebrities also stayed in the bathing hotel: Henrik Ibsen , Sophus Schandorph , Holger Drachmann , Gustav Wied , Herman Bang . Herman Bang created a monument to the hotel with his impressionistic story Summer Pleasures (1902, German 1915). Since he took aim at the provincial narrow-mindedness of his contemporaries and since his characters were easily recognizable with a knowledge of local conditions, Bang's publication aroused considerable irritation among the caricatured citizens.
With the closure of the Fjerritslev – Frederikshavn railway line, the local train station was also closed .
