Santiago City

Santiago City ( Filipino : Lungsod ng Santiago ) is a Philippine municipality (Component City) and the capital of Administrative Region II, Cagayan Valley. Santiago City is located in the province of Isabela , but is an independent provincial-free city and is only assigned to the province for statistical purposes. It has 134,830 inhabitants (August 1, 2015 census) who lived in 37 barangays . It is classified as a first income class community in the Philippines and as partially urbanized . The name Santiago is derived from the name of the patron saint of the city Jacobus the Elder ( span : Santiago).

Santiago City is located in the southwest of the province and the topography is characterized by flat terrain. The city is surrounded by the massifs of the Cordillera Central in the west, the Caraballo Mountains in the south and the western foothills of the Sierra Madre and lies on the banks of the Diadi River, a tributary of the Cagayan . It is 326 km north of Manila and is accessible via the Marhalika Highway . The nearest airport is in Cauayan City , which is served by the Cebu Pacific airline four times a week. Their neighboring communities are Ramon in the northwest, Echague and San Isidro in the east, Cordon in the south.

It is not known when the first settlement in the urban area was founded. Originally the settlement was called Carig and was inhabited by the Gaddang and Ibanag tribes. On October 30, 1713, the Pueblo Santiago de Carig was founded, which was administered by a mission station. On May 4, 1743, the community was consecrated to the patron saint Jacobus the Elder. In 1746 Santiago became the political center of the region. On May 5, 1994, Santiago was elevated to an independent urban district and a component city.
