Schüler Helfen Leben (SHL) is an organization founded in 1992 that has been active in the field of education, youth and peace work in the Western Balkans and has been active in Syrian refugee camps in Jordan since 2013 . It consists of the club Schüler Helfen Leben in Neumünster (founded in 1994) and the Foundation Schüler Helfen Leben (founded in 2002), headquartered in Berlin and Sarajevo . It belongs to the umbrella organization Solidarity Action Day Movement in Europe (SAME).

In Germany, the organization collects donations for its projects and work in Germany, which is aimed primarily at German students. With the Social Day , SHL annually organizes the largest relief campaign in Europe organized by young people.

Emergence

The youth initiative originated during the Yugoslav wars in the early 1990s. Some German students at the grammar school at the city wall in Bad Kreuznach wanted to improve the situation of the young people in the refugee camps . The initiative started in Rhineland-Palatinate with the transport of relief supplies in the young people's private cars. The then Kreuznach student Clemens Beiersdorf (now Christmann) is considered to be the main initiator and initial main organizer; Important contacts and support went through Stefan Schwarz ( CDU ), a member of the Bundestag from Rhineland-Palatinate, who was heavily involved in human rights issues and humanitarian aid in ex-Yugoslavia . Soon, donations came from schoolchildren from all over Germany, which exceeded the private transport possibilities of the youngsters, so that trucks were rented. SHL was one of the few initiatives to begin with reconstruction aid during the war. SHL was supported, among other things, by the German Embassy in Zagreb, which provided the young people with an office. In Bosnia and Herzegovina , Croatia and later also in Kosovo , SHL participated in the reconstruction of more than 70 schools and kindergartens. In 2002, the association founded Germany's first children and youth foundation: The Students Help Life Foundation. This secures the projects in the long term. To this end, part of the income from the Social Day also flows into the foundation's capital. The foundation also oversees projects abroad in Southeastern Europe and the volunteers who work for SHL abroad. Today the organization wants to do youth, peace and reconciliation work and strives to improve the educational situation with various projects. In response to the civil war in Syria , Schüler Helfen Leben has also been supporting projects for Syrian refugees in Jordan and Syria since 2013 .

The social day

On Social Day, schoolchildren are called upon to swap their school desk for a job for one day and donate their wages to projects in Southeastern Europe , Jordan and Syria. The first Social Day took place in Schleswig-Holstein in 1998 and has been held regularly since then: only every two years, annually since 2004 and nationwide since 2006. After a cooperation with the Saxon Youth Foundation in 2005 (Social Day only in Saxony) and with Aktion Tagwerk 2006, the organization has been running the Social Day since 2007 without a partner. On the last Social Day (June 26, 2018), around 70,000 students across Germany earned around 1.3 million euros.

Project selection meeting

At the project selection meeting (short PAT), the students can choose the projects they want to support on the social day. For this purpose, each registered school can send three delegates who travel to Berlin and receive information about the projects to be selected and the project regions for a weekend. The projects (a Balkan project, a project in Jordan), which are financed by the funds from the Social Day, are then chosen as the highlight.

Educational offers for participating schools

Information stand with volunteer students

Schüler Helfen Leben organizes school tours every year, during which young people talk about SHL projects in break rooms and classrooms. The main focus is on the situation of young people in the Balkans. Since November 2014 this school tour has been carried out with the so-called social tag mobile. In addition to lectures, the educational offer also includes an interactive information stand in the playground and a selection of workshops. Before the Social Day, SHL also organizes information stands that provide information about the Balkan war and SHL's projects. As part of so-called “camps”, particularly interested young people have the opportunity to visit projects on site twice a year.

Voluntary social year and voluntary commitment

The organization consists for the most part of students who volunteer at SHL. These “active people” organize information stands, benefit concerts and the social day at their school, for example. Furthermore, young people can do a voluntary social year (FSJ for short). The participants can choose whether to do their service in Germany or the project regions in the Balkans. Those who apply for an FSJ in Germany coordinate the nationwide Social Day and other activities related to work in Germany from the Neumünster office.

The projects of the Social Day 2016

Violence is not a solution - tackling gender inequalities (Albania)

The project “Violence is not a solution” in Albania campaigns for the rights of women and against gender-based violence. It is carried out in cooperation with the partner organization “Women's Network Equality in Decision Making”. In seminars, media training and forum discussions, the young girls and boys learn how to deal with this problem. In addition, the young people have the opportunity to share their experiences and take joint actions against discrimination and violence against women.

Together into a better future - Help for street children (Jordan)

Because of the civil war in Syria, many refugee children and young people in the Jordanian refugee camps have no access to education. The project “Together for a better future” aims to reintegrate children and young people at risk of poverty into society with the help of educational offers and training and to offer them future prospects. In various theoretical and practical courses as well as tutoring, the young people acquire skills that will help them later in their job search.
