The 2001-02 season was the 27th season of the Austrian chess State League A . The Jenbach chess club and SC Die Klagenfurter had risen from the State League B.

Both climbers achieved relegation. However, SK VÖEST Linz had to relegate . From a purely sporting point of view, the second relegated team would have been 1. SSK Mozart , but since SV Gamlitz withdrew their team, Salzburg remained in the State League A.

The defending champion SK Merkur Graz won all competitions and thus achieved the seventh title in a row.

Qualifying tournament for the State League A 2002/03

The qualifying tournament for the State League A took place from April 12th to 14th in Absam . The participants were the Spielgemeinschaft Wüstenrot / Inter Salzburg (winner of the State League B Middle), the SV United Chocolates Tschaturanga (winner of the State League B East), the SK Sparkasse Absam (winner of the State League B West) and the SC Alpine Raika Trofaiach / Niklasdorf as Winner of the State League B South. The SV United Chocolates Tschaturanga defeated all three competitors and, like the runner-up SK Sparkasse Absam, rose to the state league A. Since the State League B was held in three seasons from the following season and the season winners were promoted directly to State League A, this was the last edition of the qualifying tournament.
