Siam Di Tella was an Argentine company.

Company history

Torcuato Di Tella (1892–1948) founded the Siam company in 1910 , short for Sección Industrial Amasadoras Mecánicas . Guido Allegrucci was his partner. Initially, machines for bakeries and later other technical devices, including refrigerators, were created . After his death in 1948, his sons Torcuato and Guido took over the company and renamed it Siam Di Tella . In the 1950s, washing machines , stoves , televisions and the Siambretta scooter were added.

In 1959, automobile production began in Monte Chingolo in the province of Buenos Aires under license from the British Motor Corporation . Another source states that the agreement with BMC was made in 1959, but the plant wasn't finished until March 15, 1960, and the first automobile was assembled on April 2, 1960. Now Siam stood for Sociedad Industrial Americana de Máquinas . The brand name was Di Tella ., Possibly also Siam . At the end of 1961 the company had around 2000 employees. In 1964, due to financial difficulties, a collaboration with IKA took place . Automobile production at Siam Di Tella ended in 1965 or 1966. The Compañía Industrial de Automotores ( CIDASA for short ) continued automobile production.

In 1986 parts of the company were sold.

In 1962 or 1963 the Kombi Traveler added to the range.

The magnet was added in 1964. He was more inspired by the MG Magnette . Its four-cylinder engine had a 76.2 mm bore, thus 1622 cm³ displacement, and made 55 kW (75 hp).

These vehicles had a wheelbase of 252 cm. They were 452 cm long, 162 cm wide and 152 cm high. The curb weight was given as 1090 kg.

In 1961 or 1962, the Argenta pick-up added to the range. The first series was based on an older model. The engine with a displacement of 1489 cm³ developed 35 kW (47 hp). The 251 cm wheelbase vehicle was 429 cm long, 159 cm wide and 161 cm high. It weighed 1003 kg. The second series, based on the 1500 , followed in 1963 . The wheelbase was 2546 mm, a little more than the sedan. The vehicle was 4586 mm long, 1610 mm wide and 1513 mm high. The curb weight was 950 kg and the payload was 500 kg.

Siam di Tella División electromecánica

In the late 1960s, SIAM's electromechanical division signed two contracts that would eventually allow heavy machinery to be produced in the country. The first contract with the US company Wabco (Westinghouse Air Brake CO) was for the production of three models of Wabco motor graders at its Monte Chingolo plant. These were the models 440, 444 and 660. This contract was in force until the mid-1980s, where Sade (Sociedad Argentina de Electrificación) had been producing the motor grader models 130 H and 160 H under the Siam Sade brand since 1984 1990s continued.

The second contract was with International Harvester for the production of the front loader Payloader H60B, extended until the late 1970s.
