The Type 114 is a container ship type from the Sietas shipyard in Hamburg-Neuenfelde , which was manufactured in eight units from 1981 to 1983. The last ship of this series was scrapped in Alang in spring 2020 .

history

The Sietas shipyard delivered the type ship Amaranta to the Hamburg shipping company Peter Döhle on October 1, 1981 . The second ship of the series, the Westerland , received the Rendsburg shipping company Hans Peterson & Sons on November 14, 1981 . The Mexican Tecomar SA, based in Tuxpan , took over two units on March 30, 1982 with Tuxpan and on May 25, 1982 with Tumilco , which they used in the liner service from Veracruz via Houston to Antwerp and Bremen . The fifth ship in the series, the Alexander Schröder , went to the Hamburg shipping company Richard Schröder on October 28, 1982. The Pacific, ordered by the Braker shipping company Hans Beilken, and the David Bluhm , ordered by the Eckernförde shipping company Wolf-Rüdiger Bluhm , had been chartered to the French Compagnie Maritime d'Affrètement (CMA) before they were completed and were named Ville de Lumiere or delivered on March 13, 1983 with the name Ville de D'Aurore from the shipyard. The delivery of the last ship, which the Hamburg shipping company Klaus tom Wörden had commissioned as Ursus , took place on April 22, 1983 with the charter name Aqaba Crown . It was initially used in liner service for the British shipping company Cunard on the Cunard Arabian Middle East Line (CAMEL) from Felixstowe to the Red Sea , where Aqaba , Jeddah , Port Sudan and Hodeida were called as scheduled .

The Tuxpan was lost without a trace in the Atlantic with 27 crew members between February 24 and February 28, 1987 . It had left Bremen on February 16 for the port of destination Houston and on February 24 at around 3:30 p.m. it last sent a position information around 1000 nautical miles northeast of Bermuda (35 ° N, 49 ° W). A hurricane-like storm with wind force 11 and very heavy swell of force 8 prevailed in the area concerned . It subsequently became known that the Tuxpan was in an unseaworthy condition when she left Bremen.

The Alexandria (formerly Alexander Schröder ) fell on 30 June 1995 in the Korean Strait about eleven miles south of Busan in position 34 ° 54'N, 129 ° 02'E. After leaving Busan, it collided with the Chinese freighter Xin Hua 7 (IMO 8032803). All 24 crew members of the Alexandria were found alive.

The Umfolozi (formerly Pacific ) collided with the suction dredger Ingwenya (IMO 8019289) on the night of September 16-17 , 2005 while leaving Walvis Bay , where she was torn open on the starboard side. The crack extended across all cargo holds and the engine room. The ship returned to the port and sank there due to the water ingress on the quay of the container terminal. The Umfolozi was then declared a total loss and sold in this condition. The new owner had it repaired the ship and brought it in 2006 as Michael S again going.

The type 114 was manufactured in sectional construction and is an extended version of the type 113. It had a total length of 133.30 m (122.96 m Lpp , 129.38 m freeboard length ) and a width of 20.20 m. The height from the keel to the upper deck was 11.40 m, the maximum draft 8.67 m. All ships in the series had two port- mounted NMF cranes with a load capacity of 35 t each. The three box-shaped cargo holds with a total volume of 15,625 m³ (14,911 m³ ball space) were equipped with reinforced folding hatch covers made by MacGregor. The hatch of the forward cargo hold, which in the region of the forecastle lay was 6.30 m long and 13.00 m wide. The size of the other two hatches was 37.80 m × 15.30 m each. The Type 114 could stow up to 605 20-foot standard containers (TEU), of which 286 TEU were in the holds and 319 TEU on deck. Alternatively, a maximum of 266 40-foot containers (FEU) plus 69 TEU could be loaded, of which 132 FEU plus 22 TEU in the holds and 134 FEU plus 37 TEU on deck. There were connections for 50 refrigerated containers on board.

The two ships Tuxpan and Tumilco ordered by Tecomar differed in some details from the other units. In order to be able to complete the circuits to Europe without refueling there, some of their ballast tanks had been converted into additional fuel tanks. In addition, at the request of the shipping company, both ships had been given a modified tank cover , the design of which was taken from the shorter Type 113. The top of the tank did not have a consistently uniform incline, but rather had two 90-degree steps in its course. This structural modification led to construction-related problems because the rigidity of the two ships was reduced. Shortly after delivery, numerous cracks appeared, among other things in the tank roof, the higher ballast tanks ("wing tanks") and the hatch covers.

On delivery, the two Tecomar ships were measured with 8,350  GRT , all other units in the series with around 7,900 GRT. The carrying capacity of the Type 114 ships varied slightly and was between 11,708  dwt ( Westerland ) and 11,847 dwt ( Amaranta ). The David Bluhm was after its initial charter in the year 1983 as changing ship entered and recorded with 4,325 GRT and 8,500 dwt as protection Decker respectively with 7,892 GRT and 11,745 dwt as Volldecker. The Westerland was registered as an interchangeable ship in 1986 with 4,384 GRT and 8,511 dwt as protective decker and 7,897 GRT and 11,708 dwt as full decker. In the mid-1990s, the David Bluhm and the Pacific with 8,328  GT , the Tumilco with 8,350 GT, the Ursus with 8,386 GT, the Amaranta with 8,388 GT and the Westerland with 8,389 GT were re-measured.

Most of the ships in the series were powered by a 4,411  kW (5,997  hp ) six-cylinder four-stroke diesel engine of the type MaK 6M 601AK, which operated on a controllable pitch propeller . Notwithstanding this, the Tuxpan and the Tumilco received a six-cylinder four-stroke diesel engine of the type MaK 6MU 601AK with 6,002 kW (8,160 hp) and the Westerland a Hitachi B&W five-cylinder two-stroke diesel engine with 4,413 kW (6,000 hp). For berthing and casting off maneuvers, the ships had an electrically powered bow thruster with 368 kW of power.
