Sigmund Schott (bank manager)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Sigmund Schott (born August 8, 1852 in Rödelheim , † April 2, 1910 in Frankfurt am Main ) was a German bank director, literary critic and journalist .

Life

Sigmund Schott visited the Frankfurt Philanthropist and then took "a position in the goods department". At the end of the 1860s he joined the securities and exchange bank , where he worked for a long time and was most recently authorized signatory of this bank. Politically, Schott was a democrat and was active in various associations in Frankfurt, such as the “Democratic Club” and the “Democratic Association”. For many years he was a member of the board of the “Commercial Association”. Schott worked as a journalist in many newspapers as a valued employee, for example in the Frankfurter Zeitung of Leopold Sonnemann , the National-Zeitung , the Allgemeine Zeitung Munich, the Norddeutsche Allgemeine Zeitung , the magazine Das literäre Echo , the Wiener Abendpost , the newspaper Die Woche and others.

For many years, Schott was in personal and correspondence with important personalities of his time. These included Ludwig Walesrode , Guido Weiss , Gottfried Keller , Wilhelm Raabe , Theodor Fontane , Emil Rittershaus , Wilhelm Heinrich Riehl , Eduard Engel , Karl Marx , Ricarda Huch , Marie von Ebner-Eschenbach , Karl Frenzel and others. The largest surviving correspondence concerns Wilhelm Raabe and Paul Heyse .

He belonged to the Israelite community in Frankfurt. Sigmund Schott was a bibliophile who left a large collection of Lessing's works . Around 450 books by and about Lessing were sold from the estate to Yale University in 1948 . A book by Laurence Sterne , which Schott acquired from Arthur Schopenhauer's estate, is now in the Frankfurt City and University Library .

Schott married Flora Lehmann on May 27, 1881. The marriage had five children: Paul Moses Schott (* June 22, 1882; † 1936), until his "leave of absence" in 1933, a teacher at the grammar school in Dillenburg , Johanna Schott (* September 4, 1883; † 1952), Bernhard Ludwig Schott (born December 14, 1884; † 1944), murdered in Auschwitz concentration camp with his wife and two children; Jacob Georg Fritz Schott (* November 23, 1888; † 1955) and Lucie Margarete Schott (* October 30, 1893; † 1956).

Schott died on April 2, 1910 in Frankfurt and was cremated in the Offenbach crematorium on April 5, 1910 . His boss, the bank director Karl Herzberg, and Carl Theodor Curti, the representative of the “Democratic Association” of the “Journalists 'and Writers' Association”, to which Schott had belonged since 1888, spoke here . " Heinrich Emden dedicated the usual three roses to his childhood friend on behalf of the 'Loge zur Aufstieg Morgenröthe' ."

Mix-ups

In his research on Theodor Fontane, Karl Marx, Wilhelm Raabe and also in the antiquarian bookstore, the Frankfurt banker Sigmund Schott is often confused with the politician or statistician of the same name ; or life dates and places of work are mixed up or exchanged.
