Soazza (German obsolete Sowaz or Zauatz ) is a political municipality in the Moesa region in the Swiss canton of Graubünden .
coat of arms
Blazon : Saint Martin in gold (yellow) on a black horse , sharing the red cloak with the beggar
Saint Martin is the patron saint of the parish church of San Martino and was already depicted in the parish seal.
geography
The clustered village of Soazza lies on the remains of a glacier bar destroyed by the Moësa on the border between the upper and lower Misox . The western border forms a mountain range that separates the Misox from the Calanca valley. In the east, the extensive municipality extends to the border with Italy. With the exception of the hamlet of Druna on the left side of the valley floor of the Moësa, this eastern part of the municipality is hardly populated. Of the entire municipal area of over 46 km², almost 25 km² - exactly 2490 hectares - are covered by forest and wood. Another 1746 hectares are unproductive areas (mostly mountains). There are 333 hectares of arable land, 286 hectares of which are Alpine farms. The remaining 68 hectares are settlement areas.
Neighboring communities are Mesocco , Rossa , Calanca , Lostallo and San Giacomo Filippo in Italy.
history
The village was first mentioned in 1203 under the then name Soaza . The community was independent as early as 1359, but was ecclesiastically under the Collegiata of San Vittore GR ; in 1626 it had to pay tithes to them. In 1710 Soazza bought Alp Ingamba in the area of the municipality of Lostallo for 1000 Thaler. From Soazza a path leads over the Forcola to Chiavenna , which used to be a busy route and brought traffic.
