Leggia was a municipality in the Moesa region of the canton of Graubünden in Switzerland until December 31, 2016 . On January 1, 2017 , Leggia merged with the municipality of Verdabbio to form the new municipality of Grono .

geography

The village is located on a terrace on the right bank of the Moësa (river) around 15 km northeast of Bellinzona . The municipality extends over the valley floor and the mountainous landscape on the left side of the Moësa up to Pizzo Paglia (2,593 m above sea level) on the border with Italy. Of the entire municipal area of ​​915 hectares, 585 hectares are covered by forest or wood, many of which are chestnut trees. Another 226 hectares are unproductive areas, mostly mountains. The remainder consists of 79 ha of agricultural land and 25 ha of settlement area.

history

The village was first mentioned in 1219 under the name de Legia at the time . The community shared the fate of the entire Misox . In the Middle Ages, the area belonged to the Lords of Bregenz and then to the Counts of Sax-Misox . After they had sold the region to a Milanese count, the municipalities joined the Graubünden Gray League in 1496 to protect themselves and bought themselves free in 1549.

In the past, the inhabitants lived from cultivation of meadows, cattle, vegetable growing and viticulture. Today there are quite a few commuters in the nearby Bellinzona economic area who work in industry or in service professions.

The place is on the main connection from Bellinzona to Chur via the San Bernadino. The A13 motorway runs through the municipality. The closest motorway connection is in Roveredo .
